I did a full read of all threads on this topic some years ago. I still haven't condensed all of the information into a concise format, but here is an admittedly hasty compilation of most of the important information I've collected.

--------------------------------------------------

Try disabling the Steam Cloud. It often doesn't sync well with this game and sometimes can cause problems with loading the game. I make my own backup saves of the game's save file.

--------------------------------------------

Try running the game in different Windows Compatibilty modes. Don't use the automatic compatibility detector. Just manually choose different ones to see if any of them will work. Let me know if you need help figuring out how to do this.

Some people get it to work with a certain compatibility mode, which seems to be different for different people, while some people get it to work if they turn off all
compatibility modes. Or try this person's fix:

Any ideas?

I found a way around it by using a virtual machine. The game was made for Windows XP and earlier versions. All I do now is load up my VM and I can play with no problems. Let me know if you still are searching for an answer.

------------------------------------------

Try running in Windowed mode. You can change the resolution in the game files if the window is too small.

Here are some tips someone posted about using the config.dat solution that you may not have read before:

"Visited the link earlier in this discussion about fixing "config.dat". It worked for me, but I have three tips for anyone trying to use that method:

First, the ProgramData folder is hidden, so make sure you open the full path (eg. "C:\ProgramData\WildTangent\FateSteam\Persistent"

Second, when you create the "config.dat" file, make sure you set the file type as "All Files" when saving (otherwise, you may accidentally create a file called "config.dat.txt", even if it doesn't *look* like that's the case).

Third, after typing in "FULLSCREEN:0" into the file, follow it up by pressing <Enter> (leaves a blank line at the end of file). The application doesn't appear able to process configuration lines that aren't terminated with a newline."

Someone else's instructions on the config.dat solution:

This game will now exit.

Tried changing compatibility. None of them work. Please help me get the game working! Thank you!
so it seems to be an issue with the game detecting screen resolution and such. heres what i did. first disable all compatability options. wont need them. second see if you have a config.dat in C:\ProgramData\WildTangent\FateSteam\Persistent (the programdata file is hidden so if you dont enable hidden folders. ask google if you dont know how) if so open it with notepad and change full screen to 0 the height 800 and width to 600 if it doesnt exist open notepad and enter the following (the fps is there because it needs it there or will error from it not being in the right posistion) save it as config.dat make sure you set the dropdown for file to type to all types or it will still save as a txt.

SCREENWIDTH:1280
SCREENHEIGHT:720
SHOWFPS:0
FULLSCREEN:1

make sure theres an extra blank line at the bottom of the file and save it as config.dat make sure you set the dropdown for file to type to all types or it will still save as a txt. then lastly right click the config.dat in the fate file and hit properties. in the security tab make sure your user has full control checked. if not hit edit and check it for your user. open the game and it should open fine. once at the main menu set your display options to your hearts content and the game should open fine from then on in the settings you chose. best of luck!

Just make sure that you change the resolution in the config.dat thing once you have it, not the actual game, because changing it in the game causes it to crash again.

Also note that sometimes you will get a trapped cursor from switching to windowed mode, so here's a solution for that:

TRAPPED CURSOR

Cursor "trapped" in the corner of the game?
If the cursor seems stuck? Then the issue is that the resolution on the monitor is set too high for the game. You can fix it though.

Step 1: You will need to change the setting FULLSCREEN to 0 in the config.dat file. (read above to find where that file is, how to see it, etc)
Step 2: Launch the game and change the resolution inside the game to a lower setting, like 1024x768.
Step 3: Head back to the FULLSCREEN setting in the config.dat file and up it to 1.
Step 4: Relaunch the game, and the cursor will be able to move around again.

------------------------------------------

Try unplugging any extra devices and monitors.

-------------------------------------------

Try playing offline without Steam by running it from the .exe file.

-----------------------------------------------

Some people reported that, for them, it was a runtime error with different versions of Microsoft C++ or C+++

Someone posted Wild Tangent's support page about this.

As a quick note, WildTanget posted a support article on their website. So if anyone is having trouble understanding the steps listed on the forums here, try going over to their support article and see if that can help clear up any misunderstandings: https://support.wildtangent.com/hc/en-us/articles/205720935-FATE-on-Windows-10

-------------------------------------------------

Another person got the game to work fine by just running it as administrator.

-------------------------------------------------

If you are using Riva Tuner or any similar program for your gaming, then turn that off, since it can cause problems for some games.
