Town Portal spell secret?

(Don't you just hate it when you find some really great advice in this forum, forget some of the details, then never seem to find it again?)
My "lost hint" had to do with grinding: something about setting a Town Portal (either by book or by casting,) then going back through the levels you've already covered, then re-using the spell without recasting it. Someone said that the spell is virtually endless, but only worked if you only went one way with it. And how does that work? Say you're on level 16, for example. You've cleared it out, then set the spell. Do you then work your way by stairs up all 15 previous levels, sell whatever loot you may have picked up, get quests for level 17 on the surface, then use your Town Portal to get back to level 16? Has anyone else ever tried it? (Pessimist here envisions running out of space long before you can get back "home." )

Sounds like you've got it right. Once you take the town portal back into the dungeon the portal closes, but if you cast it on level 16 and then walk away, it'll still be there--on that floor and in the town--until you cast it again. But portal spells are so cheap (or free with enough charm magic) that I'm not sure it's worth it. Those upper levels give you less and less useful return as you advance in power.

The pessimist can use his/her pet to carry stuff back to the town to sell (patience required). Need to remember to "identify" special items to get the full value.
