Unlocking genes
I have played this game on & off, and am up to 80% of Plagues unlocked (now doing Necroa Virus) but only 10% of genes unlocked (5 open choices in 2 categories, across all categories in total), so I don't get much "variety"!

I assumed this was deliberate and genes are just very slow to unlock. But now I see https://steamcommunity.com/app/246620/discussions/0/1736595227854905595/#c1736595227859939792 :

You have to win a game as the Shadow Plague in order to unlock a gene. I'd highly recommend playing once (it's a pretty easy disease type, just don't go for any symptoms right away), saving the game near the end, and replaying it until you've unlocked everything for the Shadow Plague. If you don't do that, you would have to win 15 different times, which would get stale extremely quickly, especially with all of the patience that the Shadow Plague requires.

Also, you will have to go through this unlocking process 4 different times. Once for the Shadow Plague (that I already mentioned), once for the Simian Flu, once for a certain zombie-related disease that you will unlock later, and once for all disease types besides the 3 mentioned earlier (some of the general genes are also used with said 3, but if I recall correctly, you can't unlock them with said 3)

I have never replayed a scenario once I have won it, just moved onto the next. So now I am wondering: is this wrong? Am I supposed to replay or something to unlock more Gene choices? Does this only apply to the two plagues mentioned here (I haven't done Shadow or Simian yet), or have I already "missed out" and should go back to certain old ones?

I'd say yes. I personally indeed unlocked as many genes as possible as Bacteria (aka all genes except the Necroa, Simian and Shadow) before continuing, added a lot of variety.

But I don't understand what I have to do to gain them? Replay, win again, and I will get a different one? Or lose and I still get one? Sometimes, always, randomly? Which plagues? Etc.! Could someone kindly explain?

you win a game on any difficulty to get one, just repeatedly play bacteria on casual to unlock them

So I have been discovering, thanks! I had no idea this was the case. Each time I won a level I went onto the next one... Was I supposed to know about replaying bringing more unlocks?

I mean, I think that seeing a gene unlock after 2nd or so victory should've made it clear to you.
