Advice on Heroes?
I played this game way back when on Flash for free. I just purchased it today and got through the first three stages and challenges when I realized I had this "hero" option on the map screen...

Any advice for someone completely unfamiliar with heroes?

There's just a few things that I can suggest, as I'm not very good with the game. From what I can tell, each character is designed to fit a certain playstyle.

Each hero that I've unlocked so far (but I'm early into the game) seem balanced and not any one is really super-powerful over another. They have a certain number of skill points and they split them across the four attributes (from top to bottom): Melee damage, Health, Ranged damage, and Speed. As you reach later levels, the heroes that you unlock can be more min-maxed, but they can also be much harder to use. For example, you can find a hero that does ridiculous damage, but he'll have very low health and dies easily.

However, all of the heroes should be used aggressively. That is, you want them near the front lines always attacking enemies. Whenever a hero attacks or does a special move, it gets XP. It doesn't matter what it's attacking as it'll move the bar along at a set interval when a hero is fighting. The idea is that you want them to kill steal as much as possible. (The blue bar under their health bar is their experience meter.)

Leveling up heroes does many good things. It increases their health and damage, but it also starts unlocking their special abilities. At higher levels, they'll use them more often. The special moves are always good, and the AI uses their specials in a reasonably smart manner.

Heroes can die, especially if they are fighting an enemy with a ranged attack. Melee heroes have limited aggro range and if they are being shot by an enemy from a distance, then they'll just stand there until they die. It's really irritating but it means you have to pay attention. If a hero is out of combat and not moving for two seconds, the hero will regenerate health extremely fast (like 1/3 of their max health every second). So you're supposed to move them to a safe location for a few seconds if they are low on health, then move them back into a fight.

Just to add on, in short: melee heroes require more micromanaging, ranged heroes don't but tend to be more squishy if they can't kill the enemies before it reaches them. All heroes function as mobile towers; while what the comment above said is true (being that you should strive to level the heroes as much as possible at the beginning), sometimes it might be better to use your heroes as a last line of defense at the ending points of the road, especially when there might be leaks in your normal tower setup even with reinforcements and Rain of Fire.

As a piece of friendly advice, it is entirely possible to complete ALL stages on normal, heroic and iron modes [at the current standard normal difficulty, assuming they'll add a veteran difficulty eventually] WITHOUT the use of a hero. Having the hero is but a bonus.

Yeah, I did that when the game was free on a website. =P Although I thought you couldn't use a hero during challenges?

I was in the same boat as you; played the flash game to death multiple times over on their website. Got it here on Steam and was stoked to see that I now can get a hero. I've unlocked a few. So far I really like Alleria Swiftwind (the female elf archer) and Bolin Farslayer (the dwarf with gadgets). I tried out Malik Hammer Fury for a mission and he was alright. Once he's leveled up he has a sweet hammer attack that can stun multiple enemies, stopping them in their tracks for a bit.

Best thing I've realized is to try and level them up ASAP to unlock their abilities by killing garbage in the early waves. Bolin is particularly good at holding choke points because he drops mines everywhere and launches a glob of oil from his rifle that slows enemies down. Alleria can summon a wild cat type animal to fight along side her and she has a multi-shot ability to hit several targets at once.

You only have 1 hero early on: Sir Knight. As you progress you get more heroes, you probably want to use the newest hero.

Among the first heroes, I think Gerald Lightseeker is the best, used with Barracks and Reinforcements. His Courage Ability allows him to block very efficiently.

When you unlock Magnus Spellbane, choose him. He is (from my point of view) the best hero in the campaign: he does very good damage, at ranged distance, summons illusions to slow the mobs and, most important, he TELEPORTS. He allows you a lot of micromanaging and level up very fast because he does very good hit and run. But be careful, he has low health and does low melee damage. If he gets in a fight, teleport him back to summon illusions and attack efficiently.

After you completed the campaign, best heroes for me are:
- Elora Wintersong, because she's fast and slow down ennemies.
- Ingvar Bearclaw, because he's tough and summons Vikings Ancestors.
- Thor, because he does huge damage and has huge health.

That's my advice with heroes, but I suggest you try others heroes too, maybe they can fit you better than me ;)

HOCUS POCUS ! :krskull:

+1 for Ingvar Bearclaw, he's the only hero I use now after unlocking all of them :)
