Legionnaires will not target flying enemies with Spear Throw
I'm actually having trouble getting an Iron award in Icewind Pass because of this.

When upgrading Legionnaires with Spear Throw, they do not seem to use it. Ever. I have never seen them even use the thrown spear against ground enemies let alone flying ones. I have had a couple cases in Icewind Pass during the Iron challenge with a single flying enemy getting passed the Wizard tower. If I spawn Legionnaires under the flying enemy, around it, before it comes, nothing matters, they do not use the spear that supposedly can be used on flying enemies.

Do you have to somehow manually give them a spear? It's not clear if there is actually a reason they won't use the spear.

After posting this I tried some other things. I upgraded the Wizard Tower before I upgraded anything else. All of the abilities I upgraded, other times I would upgrade Death Ray, or Teleport, or both. The special abilities gave the tower no advantage over the sheer number of flying enemies. For the challenge, it seems the best tower is the Arcane tower, as it one shots the flying enemies that fly near it.

The problem still seems to be the sheer amount of flying enemies. The Tower cannot kill them all quickly enough. One always gets through regardless of how I upgrade the tower.

You might have some restrictions for these challenges. Look into it.

I don't understand what you mean.

The challenge is Barracks and Bombards only. If there are restrictions on what villagers can attack with it is not made clear in any of the challenges at all.

Either way if this is in fact the case and the spears for them are disabled, Icewind Pass Iron Challenge is almost impossible unless your Wizard Tower flips off RNG and manages to kill the two flying enemies that get passed it.

The Iron and Heroic modes limit the upgrade levels. The limit is shown when you select the mode. I just checked and in Icewind Pass, they're limited to level 4, so the reinforcements won't have the spears.

Iron mode is certainly possible on Icewind Pass, but I can't offer any tips, since I did it so long ago. But the topic below has links to videos, including one for Icewind Pass Iron mode. Maybe that will give you some ideas.

Edit:
Let me add one thing, while I'm thinking about it. If you're trying to get the achievement for completing all of the Iron mode challenges, make sure that you're not playing on Casual difficulty. For the "complete all maps" achievements, it only seems to count if you're playing at Normal or Hard.

It certainly is possible but only if you use the meteors. This is the only place in the game where I have to rely purely on the meteors to get me through a level.

I still feel this particular area is unbalanced by a very small margin, but a margin that prevents progression.

Besides this, you were saying something about Levels as far as villagers, where can I find what levels correspond to what upgrades?

It's just a count of the rows (levels) on the Upgrades screen. I think there are 5 rows, so a mode that limits the upgrades to level 4 disables the top level (like the spears). Just to be clear, the limit applies to all upgrades, not just the reinforcements.

FWIW, I just watched the video for Iron on that map and one big "trick" for handling the fliers was to put the reinforcements before the magic tower, to kill/delay the wolves. That left the magic tower free to target the fliers. They also upgraded some barracks to barbarians. As I recall, they can throw axes at flying targets, in which case they would be backup for anything that might get past the magic tower.

Yeah, that's what I did. I even upgraded the units meant for delaying the wolves all the way up to Paladin which wasn't even necessary. The Tower targeting the wolves was not my problem, it was purely the one (sometimes two) fliers getting past it because of the clumping together that happens towards the end of the flyers.

Thanks for clearing up how the upgrades are leveled.

No problem.
in some iron or heroic chalenges you have a limit to what star upgrades you can use in these challenges and the spear throw upgrade is probably restricted
2 barracks lvl 2 up by where them gargoyles be, bombards at bottom for brigands, have a barracks from bottom reinforce gargoyle opening with barbs + throwing axe upgrade incase one gets through. YW homie
