As someone who has so far beaten the main game on veteran difficulty and is going for the completionist play through, i can tell you that the best combo varies on the opponenets youre facing and the layout of the level.
If you have one path to guard, set up a lot of Tesla towers in close proximity to each other and be sure to get at least *1 of the shock field upgrade. This creates a huge crowd control area in which you just need to have a hero or barracks to make sure the enemies stay in the area.
Works best against demons, necromancers and skeletons especially.
A good combo is Sorcerer's Mage + Tesla x104. They both work very efficiently and can clear out many enemies. The Tesla is your main damage output here. Not only it controls crowds, but it also helps with strong enemies, as the bolt's damage stacked up can easily tear through their HP. Also keep in mind that Tesla ignores 50% of armor, so it shouldn't huge problem. For the Sorcerer's Mage, you want to use it mostly as support and add that additional magic damage to finish off the enemies. But the main trick is that Sorcerer's Curse halves armor of affected enemies, which greatly increases effectiveness of Tesla. However, keep in mind that it wouldn't help against physically immune enemies, so you'll need mages for them. The Elemental will help keep enemies in place while Polymorph will help against tough enemies, as neither of towers can deal with them efficiently. For that purpose though, you would build additional Arcanes and Musketeers with their instas.
Another one is Rangers' Hideout + Paladins + Arcane Wizard + some AoE tower
On that one, the archers should be your main damage source. Once you've build them, buy Wrath of the Forest - it will greatly help you as the vines stops enemies and deals some damage to them. Do not try to invest in Poison early - it costs too much to be efficient in early waves, so save money for it only in later waves where you have strong defenses to compensate this purchase and get additional True damage. The Paladins, is obviously, is your blockers of choise. Still, you need to invest in them early as they aren't that useful without upgrades. Healing Light should be your priority, as it renders Paladins invulnerable to many enemies. Once you've stronger defenses, you can buy Shield of Valor so they can block even longer. But you should not buy it if you expect magic damage-dealing enemies as they ignore this armor. For Holy Light, buy it only when you expect your Paladins to encounter numbers of weak enemies. The Arcane is your main magic-damage source and the main way to get rid of tough enemies. Death Ray should be bought first - it instantly removes a single enemy. But use it with caution - one could waste it on some sneaky enemies while potential target simply walks through. Because of that, you can buy Teleport - it can either teleport that sneaky enemies away or even tough ones. In that case, these enemies barely can reach the tower again before Teleport recharges, thus, stalling them indefinitely. And of course you need some AoE tower to take care of big groups of enemies. Teslas is usually the preffered choise.
So with that tips, you may get some useful info and progress further in game. Good luck!
P.S. So as I guess, you were mentioning: Archer Tower - tree is Rangers' Hideout with Wrath of the Forest and Posion Arrows respectively; Purple Mage is the Arcane Wizard with Death Ray and Teleport respectively. (no one cares, but still)
