Half of the screen is black bars???
I thought it would only be for the intro but omg it's throughout the entire game and there doesn't seem to be a way to disable them???

I can't understand this nonsense with the black bars either. Cinema feeling, maybe, but even there it's stupid. In the beginning we still had 4:3 monitors, then you could understand it because the cinemas had a different format, but since the introduction of widescreen it's so garbage. I have 16:10 (hate widescreen) monitors and would like to make full use of it, but no, 1/3 is black.

Many thanks to Salinga for the solution

Yeah, get a 21:9 monitor. Otherwise, no.
Welcome to your "cinematic" experience. Enjoy your stay.

Me too. I was waiting for the 2.39:2 aspect ratio to go away so I would know when I could use the controller, but no. The whole thing is like that. It isn't the black bars that bother me. It is the aspect ratio. Who wants to play something in 21:9, even with a proper monitor? It is still tons of rendering power going to stuff on the sides that doesn't need to be seen.
I loved the first game and gifted it to half a dozen or more friends.
I pre-ordered this new game, but refunded it after playing for an hour. It was just too distracting.
I hope they come out with a patch. Or if it is so cinematic that it doesn't deserve a decent aspect ratio, maybe I'll just watch a playthrough.

I'm glad I got the bars because otherwise I would go from 60fps to 40 probably :D

Yeah - really disappointing. I totally understand you refunding it. I got it on Game Pass for PC - and having 20-30fps on my 3050 RTX even with DLSS set to Performance - I'm watching a full playthrough on YouTube :(

RTX 3050 is a very low end card i believe the 3050 is only available for Laptops yeah thats a bit crappy to be honest i would just buy it on Xbox personally or get it on PS5 since Microsoft want to bring their games over to PS5 now.

I mean - I can play games released in 2022 without any issue on that front. I've only had to lower the setting from Ultra/High to Medium on a literal handful of occasions. Otherwise - I'm getting well over 60 FPS in damn near everything I play. So...no. Not a low-end card. It rocks.

You buy a movie, you get a movie down to the 2.39:1 aspect ratio. Simple as.
Surprised they didn't lock the FPS to 24 too.

the performance is not good.
it's a graphically demanding game, yes, but the performance could still be a bit better.
in the starting area i see 40-50fps with 4090oc/7950x3d at 4k hdr dlaa everything maxed out and variable rate shading disbaled.

Is it really for cinematic reasons or for a performance boost?

For performance because it runs terribly, but they will claim that its for cinematic reasons because they can tack that onto the real reason without having to actually lie, because obviously admitting a fault or negative feature within your own game is just impossible.

Go into C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Hellblade2\Saved\Config\Windows

Open up Engine.ini in notepad

Right at the bottom paste this in

[SystemSettings]
r.NT.AllowAspectRatioHorizontalExtension=0
r.NT.EnableConstrainAspectRatio=0

Then right click Engine.ini and set to read-only.

Next time you run the game, the bars are gone!

Not impossible, just not possible with deceivers. They'll say whatever to get your hard-earned money, but to be honest and tell the truth? that takes courage.

It was definitely a design choice lol it barely impacts performance at all

The hellblade series plays like an interactive movie. Seriously, why are you even asking something so obvious.
