I agree that something like this would have been a great mini-series, but by way of being presented as an interactive medium, everyone gets to experience it in a way that is unique to them, even if the experience isn't super complex.
There will eventually come a time where more and more 'movies' will be playable or have interactive elements, or maybe certain characters in a TV series will be controlled by the people watching, like a CYOA experience. Games like Detroit Become Human already let players see what kinds of decisions the rest of the community made for each character.
As virtual live-streaming becomes more popular in the next generations of technology and people, these kinds of interactive community events are just going to be a thing that people get together for on a national or international level.
