So did they make up the cost?
So the 24 hour peak was 3,982 and at 50 dollars a pop that comes out to roughly (without steams cut) 199,100 dollaroos. Now they took roughly 6-7 years to make this game, do you think they made their money back? Microsoft paid 117 million for Ninja Theory itself so I think it's a good investment wouldn't you say?

4 years to make. Peaked at a team of 80. (Source: Dom Matthews, studio head at Ninja Theory.) No idea if it has or will make its money back (£50m?) because I don't know what the internal value XBox puts on gamepass downloads nor even what that number is right now. Do know that anyone using peak player count on Steam as meaning total number of games sold shouldn't be trusted to give the right change from a lunch order.

It was a good ride the first time, not sure I will dish out $50 for round two. The beotch will have to spot me $25, lmao.

The game is crazy, literally.

Don't forget too that bulk sales factor in as well, which, we don't really have a way of knowing what those numbers are unless they're shared publicly on the financials/investors page somewhere along the chain (whether by M$ or wherever) in their quarterly PDFs.

Sites like Humble, Fanatical, Green Man Gaming, etc will often buy thousands of keys to be able to sell them on their websites. Of course, these are always heavily discounted and rarely help a game earn a profit, but it is still revenue (ie, if a game is $50, a bulk deal will typically look like $9/key if 2000 or more are purchased, plus a negotiated percentage of the sales).

Eh steam numbers aren't relative to total sales since it doesn't count players with private accounts or offline gamers

The incredibly lengthy dev time and also it being a big budget niche game with sparse advertising isn't doing it any favors

First game was 30 bucks at release and pretty much the consensus was buy it a discount since it was basically 2 hours long, but was considered good at that price

It was not, it's just been seven years since the first game released. In that time they've released a couple of VR games and a terrible MOBA

7 years since Hellblade, Hellblade 2 didn't enter development until an unknown date in 2020.

Only releasing in ultrawide is definitely a decision I never thought I would see. very bizzare strat right there the target audience for this game is even less than VR owners lol (not that they bothered to include VR like the first game)

Oh, okay. I had some wrong info there or read it wrong.

Thank you for clearing that up. I am sure most of that time was spent on the cutscenes.

I've been using it as a bit of a 'fool or fraud?' check on people like youtubers who've been repeating it. Takes just a tiny bit of knowledge about Ninja Theory, or even a couple of seconds of research, to realise it's wrong. Helps with sifting for opinions which may be even vaguely interesting.

I read somewhere it was actually 5 years, even before Pandemic.

I'll go with what Dom Matthews has said. The trailer was the only thing which existed when that was released. There may have been pre-production work, which would be normal, but he pointed out that they were also making the (failed) Moba which was released March 2020. Don't have timesheets to be more specific.)

edit: I know the pandemic restrictions were in place when they were doing field trips to Iceland to inform what they were going to make, and to do all the scanning and whatever. First British lockdown was 23rd March 2020.

This game had an active dev cycle of 3.5 years (stated by Jez Corden). Even if they don't hit the profit cap they would like to (I think they probably will, given the fact that the sold digital only, and on gamepass) the studio helps other teams with their UE knowledge (like The Coalition does), plus they do all the mo-capping of the region there (stated also by Jez). I believe NT will be fine, Xbox needs to get their ♥♥♥♥ together though. If you want to have them mainly pushing visuals, then have their games planned for each of your new hardware releases or accompanying a massive AAA action title (so their "fatigued" players can play a story focused experience).
P.S. People forget that this is still a AA game. The "mass funding by MS" thing was for the fact that this studio pre-acquisition had most of their technology DIY.
