For starters, try to aim for a full team of level 10. If they aren't level 10, they aren't coming. And if you don't have a full team of level 10s, you need to work on targetted leveling better from years 270-300. If you're way off, maybe get two crucibles instead next time and don't lose one to the cadence.
I like to bring a max of 2 hunters with max/near-max relic crossbows. If it's a hunter and it doesn't have a max level relic crossbow, they aren't coming. Hunters suck on the final mission, which is kinda neat imo because they're pretty overpowered normally.
Alchemists are the best on the final mission. Way more so than they are on normal missions, because you can refill their shots at the chalice. This makes them pretty overpowered. Or so I've heard, I've never actually brought one.
Caberjacks are just really good on the final mission, bringing huge damage and really nice stuns with the blastjack caber. Their level 10 ability makes them really good, but being only able to move one set of tiles instead of two cramps their style.
When I beat my brutal ironman, I used 3 Caberjacks and 2 hunters. One of my hunters was completely useless due to lack of a good bow- so there is some leeway. I basically sent one caberjack left, one caberjack right, and one caberjack mid. Then supported the sides with the hunters, and rotated the mid caberjack around where needed. If your bloodlines are good they're pretty much invincible, but I did lose one hunter (reset stacks again!) and one caberjack twice.
I rolled with Wunderpants + Bulwark Armor + Blastcap Caber on the caberjacks, and Scopes + Level 10 / Level 7 relic on the Hunters. In hindsight, wunderpants on hunters would probably have been a better idea, because they got knocked off of level 10 by elite lapses a lot. Annoying.
Didn't have a caberjack house, so no caberjacks prettymuch the whole game at all. Final fight: 3 hunters (2 enforcers, 1 trickshot, but that wasn't really on purpose) + 2 bombers (both boomstrikers). It's all about relics and getting to level 10 (all 5 heroes with lvl 5-7 relics and trained in prev 2-3 battles). Caberjacks at level 10 are cool, but hunters are a much more safe bet throughout the whole game. You don't lose heroes if the enemy never really sees you.
