It's more driven than XCOM, with a very different strategy layer and a different focus on the style of the tactical combat.
It doesn't do as many things as XCOM, and it does some things XCOM doesn't (like random events, and bloodline management).
As a "fantasy XCOM" it does fairly well, with fewer overall systems but the same general style of gameplay.
Have custom bloodlines where you choose a series of positive and negative traits isn't a feature implemented in the game.
There's procedurally generated maps, but I think that despite the simplified graphics should simplify its management, it seems a lot based on using sort of blocks. The variations isn't huge but it works well, it's not fixed maps as was the new XCOM.
The game combats are very good, the general management can be very irritating because of a constant negative spirit and how random is used.
Not a game to skip if you like tactical squad combats (but in a sort of Fantasy context) except if you can't bear the negativity spirit. Don't expect a strategy game, it's a bit light on that aspect, it's more a tactical game.
