This game feels similar in tone, and obviously they're both set on a space station, but it's shooting to be a very different game - Startopia was essentially a game like theme park - you were catering to a constant stream of temporary visitors, there was some simulation, but it wasn't too detailed, and there were clearly defined win conditions. This game aims to be more like dwarf fortress (DF-9's a nod to this) - a complex simulation where losing is almost inevitable and your goals are the ones you set yourself.
I think it already exceeds Startopia in terms of user interface: much better feedback mechanisms, much more accessibility, there just isn't a game here yet at this early stage. So long as they don't mess up the things they're already doing well, and they don't push it out the door to soon, it should be a great game.
I wouldn't hold my breath for a big campaign, but it certainly isn't impossible.
My biggest concern is going to be the AI, granted it early access and only alpha but I have seen other games that started out as early access/alpha which had terrible AI in the beginning and people complained about it in the word from the developers were that it would get better as they continue developing the game. The end result was that it really never reached an acceptable AI level
I hope that doesn't happen here as we are very dependent on the AI in this game to play it.
