Can't enter rooms made by friends

Hey, I was just trying to play some games with some friends, but every time either of them make a room, I can't even see it, while they can both see and enter the room. And when I try to make a room, neither of them can see or enter it. I live in America, while they're both in Malaysia, and all of us are playing on steam. Is it possible that there's a setting in the game preventing us from playing together, or is it a bug?

This game has region lock. So change your steam download region to the same as your friend, or make your friend change to yours.

the region lock is for good reason. DD1 had terrible lag if the connection was bad, I'm assuming they're using similar netcode here. All my games have been smooth but nobody's been messing with region as far as I can tell from the few times i checked the person's profile on Steam.
