Now I play the game as a fighter and charge at the priest guy and any wizard guys first before moving on to bears (there are a lot of bears) and shield guys.
The good loot comes from unique enemies with a larger health bar and exploration. The regular fights are to get material needed to upgrade the good loot you get from the ways I just mentioned.
It is really annoying that the enemies ignore my companions and attack me first, but I'm ignoring my companions half the time too at this point so I guess I understand it. :|
Nah. The healer will usually only heal one enemy, it's obviously beneficial to take them out first but not essential unless you're focusing on the enemy they're healing. Ranged similarly aren't usually that dangerous (trick there is to avoid standing still).
They don't. They have an aggro system which tends to prioritise whoever is dealing them the most damage. It's something you need to be careful of as a mage because if you start chucking around those AoE spells left and right then you're going to pull the whole group on you. In fact it's likely why you find them ignoring your companions; Yatzli is the only one who does multi-target damage by default so if you're lobbing the fireballs around and hitting everyone without her then the best your companions will manage is to distract two of the group, the rest will only have one target.
You can get around it somewhat by careful use of companion skills (Kai's fire blunderbuss for example, use it after he's already engaged an enemy to shoot another one and both will tend to focus on him). The main solution though is just to be a bit more careful in spell use; don't chuck AoE around indiscriminately, keep moving so your companions are between you and the enemy as much as possible and make use of companion skills when necessary to distract enemies that get too close.
There's plenty to criticize in Avowed. But combat is far superior to Skyrim's flailing pool noodle garbage. Even modded, Skyrim combat struggles to reach the quality of Avowed.
The problem with Avowed combat is too many ranged enemy attacks, too many healer mobs and too much enemy HP.
Giving every bug and monster a spit attack is just tedious. And it makes them all feel the same. Giving every mod healers and bears makes things needlessly repetitive and highlights the lack of wildlife diversity. And the overly prevalent healer mobs are just tedious.
Combat is great. It's enemy design that sucks.
Instead were fighting the same half dozen enemies over...and over...and over...
The entire point of the skull system is to force you into upgrading your gear.
If you don't engage with that system you will get rekt.
It seems like your issue is with the upgrade system not the combat.
This game has probably the best combat of any first-person RPG.
My gear is Superb and enemies in third zone remain ridiculously tanks. And I'm talking Unique gear, here, too. Enchanted, no less.
I agree the combat system is great. I love it. But enemy design and balance needs refinement.
What difficulty are you playing on? I never had an issue with mobs at all.
I mean, they aren't easy, but not as hard as everyone is making them out to be.
Use Kai to take the heat off.
Use the wheel to pause combat and eat buffs and use companions. Companions are great if you actually utilize them. Not sure why people think they are useless.
Use the wheel to cast spells too, it gives you a breather. Honestly the wheel is a must have for some of the reasons you specified.
Use dodge.
Play around with your build
oh yeah and def keep your gear up when you can. Every little bit helps
I suck at fast paced games but this one isn't too bad.
Combat is my favorite part of this beautiful game
Explore some areas if you get stuck on Path difficulty and upgrade the weapon, it will make everything very easy.
On normal with unique pistols from are 1 and 3 at Superb. Horse Cutter and Emperors sword. Also Superb.
Things aren't too hard. In fact I find the challenge adequate. But I do think named enemies are a bit spongy.
I can confirm pistols are Easy Mode. At least to me. Slowing time by 50% with every trigger squeeze really makes things less hectic. But it's still dangerous enough in cramped spaces to be a real risk/reward thing.
It's also a seriously awesome play style!
I got a unique arquebus that I like to use in my second slot. It's a great intro to combat. and an absolute destroyer
If you want to make things [much] easier for now, so that you can respec later, go with dual wield pistols. You pretty much wreck everything. You can pump out shots back to back as stamina allows.
The standard grimoire of elements stays relevant even against level 2 enemies. Shield works well, flame is good for single target and lighting is very strong against groups. Use cold if enemy is resistant to fire.
Focus kill any enemy healers.
I played with 2 handed hammers and healers were the bane of my existence.
