Less interactivity / gameplay / story
more ... well, pick your poison. Quirky art in specific colors, maybe, which are totally not dogwhistles to a very specific "community" which only ever defines itself over sexuality.
At first, it will be singular cases. Then the whole Western AA+ market collapses. But the Eastern devs will barge into the market like in the 90s and make games great again. So there is hope.
We have no way of knowing how much time was wasted on those false starts, but the game we're looking at probably only represents 2-3 years of actual work.
That's still not great, but it does put things in more perspective:
Avowed is a product of (likely) 24-36 months by a team that was clearly having project leadership/management problems.
New Vegas was a product of 18 months by a team that (at least in comparison) was a very well-oiled machine. Even then, New Vegas released in a nearly unplayable state, requiring multiple patches.
Some believe NV's rushed launch was deliberate sabotage on Bethesda's part, as they probably didn't want to provide a bonus to Obsidian (per their contract) if New Vegas scored above 85 on Metacritic (it didn't, primarily due to the game's release state).
All and All When you see Big names like Bethesda , Obsidian Entertainment ect. You have to keep in mind more than half of the original developers that made those older games shine are most likely no longer with the company .
It certainly is a product of development hell. But the issue is: The game must be judged without that info in mind. Bad (creative) leadership choices don't make the game holy or whatever. Not to be criticized.
The game probably at one point even was a "live service" game during the hype cycle of that. I see it this way:
Original Avowed was akin to PoE 1 an attempt to revive / redefine the genre. Like Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, but with more dialogue / RPG options.
That was canned for a "live service" game.
This "live service" game was again canned and Avowed in 2025 is the byproduct of what was salvageable from that misstep.
It would explain a lot like details missing (in a Multiplayer game, you wouldn't want to have too much interactivity with NPCs) and world details missing.
me included in that, NV was extremely Empty.
Like you say they have new priorities... The first game I feel off is God Of War Ragnarok Angrboda, she is slightly annoying but still not much people complain that time because the storytelling is good. Then Dying Light 2 Lawan which completely different from the E3 version... Then the Last of Us part 2 Abby and they kill the previous protagonist Joel like a joke... Dustborn on the other hand, well it's just trash.
The last straw is Concord, a generic live service multiplayer fps that no one ask for. At least the game industry is healing now.
Yes, it's one of my favorite games of all times. I also remember the game is so broken and unfinished that to this day neither developers nor community managed to fix it.
Let's not pretend the game was perfect. Lose the rose tinted glasses.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wack that you think opinions should be enforced by law. I think you have let politics revolve around your entire personality to the point in which it has made you one dimensional. Like I have told someone else in this forum, I suggest that you get new hobbies, and meet people outside of the internet (be sure not to scare them off either).
Not as empty as Avowed... It's sad that they didn't remake Fallout New Vegas like how Capcom did to the Resident Evil series, just remake it with modern graphic with more weapons, quest and bigger world and the sales will definitely fly high rocket...
Just look at Kingdom Come 2, you can clearly tell which game got put in more effort to make than the other one...
i will give you that, for a game that was made in 14 months, it did have more to offer than Avowed.
Avowed was still fun for the little it had in it.
(3 Side quests per area and 6 bounties)
Fallout 4 is only good in the graphic, the storytelling is trash. When the dialogue getting wash down to yes, no, yes(sarcastic), leave. I knew the fallout I love is long gone and it turn to a fking minecraft building game. "Another settlement need your help", ♥♥♥♥ off Preston.
It's not a bad game, but to a studio that make deep storytelling like pillar of eternity, and when they announce a new rpg game that share the same universe as pillar of eternity, player expect more from it. Turn out it's just another rpg which the npc can't even move and react unless they got script to it.
Like NerazarPC said, maybe they intend to make avowed into a mmo rpg game but didn't make it, so they scrap the asset together and make use of whatever they can.
I can tell there won't be any expansion or dlc for Avowed, and I hope Obsidian don't make the same mistake to Outer World 2. If Outer World 2 is same as Avowed then Obsidian is really done.
