Not Perfect; does A Lot of Things Well
Avowed is not a perfect game. We all know that. The world feels a bit empty and static, and NPCs do need more life breathed into them. I will admit to all of those things.

On the other hand...this game does a lot of things very well.

The combat. It is fast. Fun. Varied. Melee weapons feel amazing to use. Shield bashing feels chunky and solid. Wands are fun and combo-liscious. Guns are cool, and different enough from wands to be fun to explore. Bows are also quite useful, in that they are the silent ranged option. Magic manages to look cool without filling my screen so full of effects I can no longer see the action. Other games could take a lesson here.

Avowed also has a good stamina management system, with a tradeoff between the protection of heavier armor and its reduction in stamina without perks.

There is also the genius 'boots and gloves as clothing' system. Each pair of boots and gloves offers one or more perks for wearing them...and since they are not armor, you don't have to worry about mixing and matching heavy/medium/light across your entire body. Add to this the ease of Transmog, and armor is varied and fun, instead of being a chore.

And let us not forget the unique loot. The world is full of genuinely unique items that compliment and even enable various play styles - all hand placed among hand crafted locations.

So yeah, the world is a bit empty. NPCs need more life, for sure. And I wish roads were populated in the various regions, if only by patrols and occasional merchants. Those things need work.

But the world building and game play are truly top notch here. I mean that. If you like solid, chunky first or third person combat, unique loot and hand crafted areas to explore, you owe it to yourself to try this. It is a far better game than it is receiving credit for.

And this is sayimg something, because as anyone can see from my profile and comments, I tend to be a harsh judge of games.

I agree nicely done
I'm enjoying it a lot. It respects my time. A lot of the things other people are complaining about aren't what I'm looking for in a game.
What would make exploration and unique items better is if you could give specific weapons and armor to your companions like you can with BG3. And I'm not talking about these 3 paid DLC outfits you can give them already, but ANY item and armor. Things like this were seriously overlooked

Yup, thats like saying "look at this house! ya its burning...but what it does really well is burning!"
I really like that this game does not have 2000 trashy items put all over the world like starfield or fallout 4

Agreed. Sure it has some common items...but an inventory management simulator it is not.

On one hand, companions have a unique look that deserves preservation. On the other...I do not disagree with you. Hopefully Obsidian learns from this, as some changes to companions over time would be welcome.

That's what I call wall licking simulators.

Agreed.

I'm sure KCD is an amazing sim like RPG. Top notch, even. But i like my RPGs a bit more fantastical than that; literal medieval Europe as a setting doesn't appeal to me personally. Still, I'll never begrudge a person liking it's depth or it's setting.

Avowed, though, suits me. Just fantastical enough to be escapist. Just complex enough to make me feel smart after a long work day, without putting me off from fatigue. It's a near perfect balance of complex and casual and that suits me.

That's not remotely similar. Burning is catastrophic failure, in this metaphor. And by its presence. Avowed is more prone to minor flaws, due to things absent.

There's ample imperfections here. Even outright flaws. The static world. Lifeless npcs. But those are minor flaws, not catastrophic failures.
It honestly makes me feel like a kid again. It values your time but also has just a LOT to explore. I'm definitely gonna 100% it. It's worth at least 3 playthroughs for me!

This is absolutely a game I will play a second time. Maybe not right away, but one day in the near-ish future, I will dust it off for a straight melee fighter run. Combat is so superbly well executed.

It really is. I think for my hard mode achievement run I'm going to do an unarmed build. I think it would be *incredibly* funny.

Well, it is certainly going to be hard mode...enjoy!
I give it 7/10. Too many static NPCs and other stuff, but I really enjoy playing and exploring.
