Avowed
Review: Pinnacle of…mediocrity
So I’ve played the un-official version of this game for about 5-10h and that’s all I can stomach. So, here’s a warning to other people from someone who was a massive Obsidian fan at one point.

TLDR: They’re dead, just like bioware.

I could just end it there, but let go into a little bit of detail and then I’ll tell you why I even bothered saying this.
This game, somehow, makes Bethesda PRGs (which I hate more then any other type of game) look better. Now that’s something wild to me. This game is so painfully run of the mill, so bland, boring and lifeless it’s just sad.
I never understood why people didn’t have this reaction to Outerwilds as well. That game was almost identical to this, just with guns. I despised it.
Visually it’s ok.
Music is ok.
Voice acting is quite good. Especially the voice actor that voiced Garrus in ME really hold up the game, for a while…
Story/writing is ok.
Combat is ok, if you wanna replay skyrim with almost no improvement. I mean you have abilities, a dodge, a parry and companions aaaand that’s about it…
Exploration is ok.
Lots of bugs and glitches. Those are probably just an homage to bethesda games right? A cherry on top?

You see the pattern here? It’s a mediocre game, painfully mediocre. I wouldn't pay more then 10-15 bucks for it.

Why does this hurt though? Because we’re talking about Mother ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ OBSIDIAN. The developers of KOTOR2, Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny, NWN2. Absolute masterpieces in role-playing. And all this was way before Larian was even heard of. But look at them now…they’ve become the replacement of Bethesda (let’s be honest starfield is MUCH worse), just a goofy studio that makes broken, mid AF games that people need to mod to even play.

It really hurts to lose both bioware and Obsidian at the same time, but here we are. It’s a sad day for RPG fans. Hopefully we’ll see the rise of more Larian-like developers, but so far, we’ve been going downhill hard, haven’t we gaming industry?

You gotta accept a little jank to do something fun and creative

I mostly agree with you, nothing is really impressive in this game but I'm having fun, and I expect to have even more fun on a second playthrough checking other choices (and maybe a 3rd one later on ?)

So I'm happy. It feels like Tyranny 2, a bit less gritty.
