Getting bought up by Microsoft kind of makes it a bit more difficult. They could easily just become another brand on as much as a whim from their corporate overlords.
Meaning, either products need to make a profit, or they've got to get some of that sweet USaid money... Oh... wait..... I can foresee two issues here already...
Slow and steady gave us BG 3, and it's good to see other companies moving towards this strategy. High burn, instant closure tactics aren't sustainable.
Pillars 1 and 2 were both funded by Kickstarters.
So was the breakout Divinity series by a little known company called Larian.
This strategy can and does work.
Hopefully they'll hire some good writers for future projects. Pentiment was good but Outer Worlds was uneven.
They aren't learning though, I personally encourage them to double down on this as it just helps us in the long run.
EA gets hit with the graveyard meme the worst but really every large company that buys out studios are all guilty of it. They will take tremendously talented and respected studios and just kill them.
I hope they are right and that I am wrong however.
That is also because Larian were a good studio even from the time they made games like eco dragonis.
Obsidian right now is busy pushing politics and not realizing that microsoft can decide to fire them if the finances look dire, just like other studios such as Bethesda did.
Concord, Dragon Age Veilguard, Unknown 9, Dustborn, Suicide Squad. And if we go further back there's even more games that "win" like Forspoken.
Long story short:
