Difference between Shield of Weapon Blocking?

Is there a reason to use a 1H + Shield when blocking, rather than just blocking with the weapon itself?

The amount of stamina consumed when blocking. Also melee weapons can't block ranged attacked without a perk but shields (or the wand) can. Different abilities also affect shields vs parrying different.
