You decide when to make camp. You don't have to do it when approaching the night. Do it at sunrise instead.
That being said, it would be nice if the game let you choose what time of day you want to exit the camp at, no argument there.
The game automatically forwards time to night when you make camp, and automatically forwards time to the morning when you leave camp. It doesn't matter what time it is when you set camp up. The complaint in this case is that any attempt to enter or interact with camp automatically forwards time, and it takes far too long for night to fall under normal play conditions. You'd basically have to actively avoid trying to do anything in camp, or be on some long expedition in an area where you can't camp, to have night fall. That means no enhancing, crafting, chatting with companions, etc.
That is only a problem if you insist on camping every half-day. If you instead play throughout the whole day (including the night), and set the camp in the next morning, your playtime during the day and during the night time will be the same.
That's what i mean.
One possible solution could be, as in AC Origins, if I remember correctly, to have the choice of how many hours you want to pass by “meditating”.
Or - in the event that the programming effort is too great - to give the player 2 options to choose from when leaving the camp.
For example “save and leave at 6 o'clock in the morning ?”
or “save and leave at 6 o'clock in the evening ?”
So that you can also take in the atmospheric change of dawn or dusk.
There are already a few ideas but i'm no developer.
