Avowed

Avowed is NOT Skyrim.
Except that's what the CEO of Obsidian pitched Avowed as.

https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/avowed-s-devs-tap-the-it-s-not-skyrim-sign-for-the-third-time-in-a-year-at-least-and-don-t-love-to-compare-games-anyway/

Here's the full quote if you don't want to read the article: "Fellow director Gabe Paramo proceeds to note that, in terms of comparing games (presumably after taking some form of sigh) that they "don't love" the lines people are trying to draw. "I've learned in my role, comparing two games, even for the team—let's forget the player for a second—even for the team it's hard to say, 'Use this like this.' You have to break down the mechanics more … a lot of players can take whatever they want from those games and go, 'It's gonna have this and this and this.' I prefer if we just better just explain what it is our game is doing."

Also fair. However, I can't help but feel like Obsidian has, naturally, brought the comparisons on itself—quite literally, in the words of Obsidian's CEO, who told us that the studio was "originally we were [pitching], in essence, our Skyrim" in the early stages of its development. It doesn't help when you look at The Outer Worlds, which smacked of 'Fallout, but in space'."

I wouldn't want a new game to be like Skyrim, or Skyrim, as I already have Skyrim. Glad it's not similar.

Good thing you're not everyone else, I guess.

He‘s close enough.
Avowed's world building is inferior to Skyrim. I will admit that. NPCs are indeed very lifeless in the cities and towns. Guards do nothing. People don't converse or even move around a lot. Not that it bothers me much, because I don't 'hang out' in cities in Avowed the way I sometimes do in Skyrim...and even there, it is minimal.

ON the other hand, game play and magic systems - the parts of the game I engage with by far the most - are VASTLY superior in Avowed, compared to Skyrim. VASTLY superior. Combat is weighty and has a good feel. Stamina matters. Magic is diverse and useful in ways that are shockingly good both on their own and in combination with physical combat systems.

So while the 5% of the game - NPC life and the towns - are a tiny bit inferior to Skyrim's terribly under sized, lightly populated little villages, the 95% of both games (game play) is so far superior in Avowed as to make comparison laughable. And while mods help Skyrim's combat, they still do not bring it on par with Avowed.
From what I've read around the development of the game, this is the 3rd version of Avowed they tried to make. They attempted a more open-world Skyrim style thing and it wasn't working, leading them to scrap their 2 previous iterations to start development on the 3rd on ... January 6th 2021, of all days.
I thought it was a medieval fortnite battle royal. That "Modern" style needs to die and fast.

Well, everyone is unique and everyone has their own opinion, so I was just giving it from my perspective. If you wanted Skyrim, wouldn't you just play Skyrim?

Sounds to me that they shouldn't have tried if they couldn't do it. You know, as we can see. Also, way to bring up politics. Almost as if ideology is a reason as to why this game's reception is mixed.

Who said I wanted Skyrim? I provided proof that Obsidian wanted to make Skyrim, at least the CEO. The big cheese.

Are you kidding? Avowed combat is atrocious. It doesn't feel weighty at all. When you hit someone it's like they freeze in place and play a stagger animation, it feels incredibly janky. Skyrim has literal arrow physics where you can technically shoot from one town and hit someone in the next town over. Avowed arrows don't even differentiate between hitting wood and stone. Etc. etc. Of course Skyrim's combat is dated, it's literally almost 2 decades old. But it's far better than this slop. And with mods? It blows this out of the water in every single respect.

Who said I wanted Skyrim?

You did when you responded to the guy glad it wasn’t Skyrim saying you’re glad he’s not everyone .

I wasn't saying I wanted Skyrim, I was saying the reality of the situation isn't dictated by this individual guy's opinion.

Forget the Smithing skill, the Power Level Number of my gear just went up one point!
Its for sure not skyrim, if it was they would not have to worry about making a profit.

And yet by saying you’re glad that’s the case you’re identifying your opinion as contrary to his.
