He'll tell you about it if you ask him. It was pretty central to Pillars of Eternity 2 so maybe they assumed everybody already knows :D

There's a fair amount of stuff to read here, they did a lot of worldbuilding on the setting
So, what they did is allow you to ask NPC's about the history and events that happened around all of the PoE's. They feed you the lore naturally (you might ask someone what they know about the Rautai or ask directly about Kai from NPCs that know him. This allows you to learn about all of the events of Pillars of Eternity without having to read an entire book (although there are history books and journals laying around as well).
Lastly, they tied a lot of the specifics of the Companions to speaking with them at Camp. They reward you with stat boosts if you take the time to finish the dialogue tree.
