You use adra (just "adra", the very first tier, not craftable from anything) to upgrade common weapons to fine (blue).
You use awakened adra to upgrade blue weapons to exceptional (purple).
You use corrupted adra for purple => superb (pink).
And adra ban for pink => legendary.
Huh.
I don't remember seeing any adra shards when I was playing the game about a month ago. Iirc, breaking down common uniques (tier 1.1) gave something like 2 herbs and 2 iron/wood. Did they change it?
Anyway, just in case you didn't know that: collecting common uniques is bad idea since the tier of unique weapons/armor found in the world scales with the tier of your highest-tier weapon/armor (rounded down to x.0) as long as you didn't "trigger"/lock that item.
So it's best to just avoid unique items you don't need right now and some time later you'll be able to come back and pick, say, a superb verison instead of common one.
maybe you never had regular adra?
try finding/purchasing a single adra piece, that should unlock crafting adra from shards
So try to find one at a merchant or wait until you come accross one.
