Quality is not only subjective it is also objective... It can be measured.. you buy the game and it doesnt even open.. is that a quality product.
Are there people (other than you) who like sports games AND open world fantasy games? If yes (and it is very likely there are), then those two types are still competing against each other.
There can be some overlap but the idea that NBA 2K25 is directly competing with Elden Ring or Tekken 8 for "audience" is highly unlikely. They are only similar in the fact they're a game.
That's an empty argument.
In case you didn't know, Steam had strict metrics for accepting games back then. Remember the Steam Greenlight initiative that allowed people to sell their own games on Steam if enough people were interested in them? That's when this started.
How many of the 18,000 were Triple-A?
As for this year, we've had around 43 "real" games so far. Everything else is just fodder, copy-paste indie games.

But in general we really are spoiled for choices and games have a harder time standing out.
Take me for example. I love first person action games like Avowed. I also like flight simulators. The games have zero overlap, and yet they compete against each other for my money.
While I agree there can be overlap; the argument is weak - people who play CSGO day in and day out aren't going to be playing Avowed beyond 1 day if at all.
You just said you said nothing. Why did you backpedal?
Unless you know each of them personally, you can not possibly make such a statement.
Well you can but... you know.
Look at you going in circles.
I think he makes a much better point for people having a variety of game types they might enjoy.
How many of those 18.000 games do you know?
