Avowed
Avowed Performance -- I'm not sure it's super great
I'm kind of surprised that there's not more discussion about Avowed's performance. For reference, I have what was six months ago the best consumer gaming hardware money can buy without shelling out > $2k USD for a 4090 (7800X3D / 4080 Super). With that in mind, at the following settings:

* 4K, DLSS Quality
* Epic settings
* Ray tracing off
* Frame generation off

I get frame rates hovering around 60 while out exploring, with very frequent dips into the mid 50s. At that kind of base frame rate I'm not comfortable turning on frame generation. Using a more aggressive DLSS target (say, balanced) does give a frame rate closer to 70, which is certainly playable, but I wouldn't call it ideal. In a game like Alan Wake 2 or Cyberpunk 2077 with path tracing on I understand that my frame rate will be fairly low unless I'm aggressive with the resolution, but unlike Avowed these games offer a huge achievement graphically -- it's a spectacle that it's worth compromising for.

I don't think Avowed really does enough graphically to warrant its level of performance. Even a game like Horizon Forbidden West, which has no ray tracing, is almost inarguably better-looking than Avowed. And in *that* game I can get around ~70fps with DLAA at 4K and max settings, which puts me about the point where I can turn FG on without noticing the latency. Don't get me wrong -- at times Avowed is beautiful, and the art direction is on point. There's just nothing exciting about what it does with graphics tech and it's not especially impressive.

*That's* the performance when exploring. As is often the case (cf Baldur's Gate 3 or Dragon's Dogma 2), stretches of the game that take place in a city hit a huge CPU bottleneck. Running quickly around Paradis results in dips into the mid-40s regardless of resolution target, with GPU utilization around ~60%. It's a little better with view distance and perhaps shadow quality turned down to medium, but no other settings make a difference.

The only way to "fix" this is with frame gen, which sucks at such a low base rate. Sure, in the presence of a CPU bottleneck frame gen might turn 50fps to 100fps, which sounds great on paper. But the latency starts to get annoying at that point.

Am I alone in this? Am I being too picky?

(Also, I know it's completely unrelated, but I've seen enough chuds here that I want to make the following clear: if you think Avowed is too "woke" or contains too many black people, or that there's something indecent about allowing the player to choose pronouns, you can get wrecked. Seriously. You're an awful person who should feel bad about themselves and I hope you never achieve any happiness in life.)

I'm playing 1080p because that's my monitor's res. 4060, everything maxed, DLSS off, smooth as butter. <shrug>

What annoys me about the performance is the stutter. Needed a mod to patch it up, which MOSTLY got rid of it.

My rig is kinda old and worn out at this point, but even nuking the graphics settings doesn't solve the issue. It's annoying.

Also running on high (mid-high) settings on a good but not cookie cutter build (specs on profile) and performance is absolutely flawless. Load screens, delays, stutter, all none existent, and game looks great. Not once considered turning down a setting, could probably turn up to be honest but just haven't given it much thought.

I've experienced ZERO stutter at all, whereas give me 7 days to die on med settings and something hates my PC. It's more than likely one particular setting as opposed to the overall which just conflicts with your current pc setup. Bloom. mesh, whatever, name ya poison

For what it's worth, I've experienced very little stuttering (it does happen on rare occasions), and load screens / delays aren't really a problem. My only issue is a lower frame rate than I would prefer, especially in the city.

Yeah, I get better frames in Stalker 2 than this, which is kind of crazy

I have a 7950X and a 4080 and the game maintains a rock solid 4K60 at DLSS Quality, with everything but Ray Tracing.

Go try playing monster hunter wilds right now! If you can!
Getting buttery smooth at 2K with a 7800XTX.
