What's the Point of Selling to Microsoft?
The whole Idea was to create a spiritual successor to Skyrim based in PoE. All I've heard is cut backs, feature removal and now we're going to be left with some Outer Worlds level of nonsense in PoE land, that's broken on launch. What's the point of selling to Microsoft if you can't spend their money on making the game you want? What a waste.

I've been following it for years as I'm a big PoE fan. I saw the outline of what they wanted to do originally, shrink into another run of the mill, watered-down, console game. I've seen hours of footage from then til now and it looks brutal. On top of that the game director just came out and said it will be a rough launch. My point was, why bother selling your company off to a soulless giant if you can't spend their money and make the game you want to make?

What makes you think it isn't the game they want? A spiritual successor to Skyrim might have made sense ten years ago, but after Bethesda milked that particular cow drier than the Sahara during a particularly arid heatwave I'm not sure anyone else would want to touch it, and I'm guessing after Starfield even Bethesda themselves might finally be realising the game isn't simply pining for the fjords.

"What makes you think it isn't the game they want?"

because they were forced to pare down from their original design and scope due to budget constraints. I would assume many were excited for Obsidian to be able to spend some of those Microsoft bucks to make a game for the ages. Missed opportunity in my opinion, I love PoE and Obsidian and was hoping for more is all.

Nobody from Obsidian has said anything about being "forced" to do anything with this game lol you're just making things up because you're upset about the direction Obsidian decided on their own internally to go in.

The game would be an open world multiplayer game, thank goodness they didn't go that route, I prefer it the way it is now.

It was the studio itself that decided to make 2 games simultaneously rather than just make 1 bigger one.

Nobody forced them, it was the studio's decision.

More than two actually, they have a third mystery project that's been hinted at in interviews

Also Pentiment was made alongside Avowed and Outer Worlds 2

Deadfire was a huge flop, sadly. So unlike Larian and Owlcat, they had to find a sugar daddy to keep them afloat.

That's not a big problem in itself, I just don't know why microsoft treats them like trash, they are a prestigious studio yet they're only making weird indie-like games and small AA games.

Yeah, because Pentiment was a wee tiny indie game that could have probably been made by 3 people. The problem was it took up Sawyer's time, and he's essentially the heart of Obsidian right now, so it was a dumb move to a lot of people.

Pentiment sold like crap.

Irrelevant. I was just pointing out that they're pretty much always working on numerous small to medium sized games instead of focusing on one big title. They also made Grounded while Pentiment, Outer Worlds 2, and Avowed were all in development.

I'm confused as to why you think this is something to be happy about. If they're happy falling from grace and being a vaguely remembered make of little half-decent AA games, then by all means.

Some of us miss old, more ambitious Obsidian, and see the slope others like Larian and Owlcat have taken that Obsidian stubbornly refuses to even look at.
