I'm full-on skipping this game
I've never been a boycotter and pretty apolitical in my gaming tastes. Avowed is getting it from me this time. The pronoun stuff is cringe but the Matt Hanson racism did me in. Maybe he should go "live in the woods" because I'm not touching another game he's associated with. I really popped for the trailer when I first saw years ago it and I was even prepared to deal with some woke stuff. I love the first person RPG genera and I really wanted to play it but I'm going to tough it out.

Indeed, a couple of dozen of hours of entertainment are not worth sacrificing your integrity for. Plus you'll have more time and money to spend on other things.
Tldr and you impact nothing.

But... but... less than 300,000 people must be a majority of 132 million! DEID Foot soldiers keep telling me so!
Even if I take Matt Hansen's comments out of the equation (I'm vehemently against cancel culture, and yes, in this case too), my main reason is that the writing will undoubtedly be watered down and compromised due to the pronouns feature. It fundamentally overrides certain aspects of character-writing that helps make each character feel unique and like an actual, living being - if everyone in the world, including evil villains just automatically know and actively respects your "pronouns", that removes nuance and makes absolutely zero sense. It helps break down the fourth wall and is a constant reminder that you're NOT in a fantasy world, but a modern "safespace" where feelings matter more than actual good writing. Basically, a compromised product.

THIS is why this "opTioNAL feAtuRe thAt yOu cAN JuST SKip" actually matters. Because it actively affects the writing.

Surely this is only effected if you select non-binary, right? Everyone magically assumes you are non-binary. If you create a male and choose male pronouns, characters will address you as such. Likewise as a female. Games have been doing that much for decades. I don't understand why a third option is so devastating to some people.

It's not real, everyone who played the preview praised the writing a lot saying it's great, and the writers are the same as PoE 1 and 2. If you're judging before it even launches you're not interested in good writing.
i wont be buying it either, not even on sale. it looks terrible

At the most I guess it means we won't get gender specific writing but that's pretty rare in general anyway. I can think of a handful of games that had one or two instances of it but I'm not sure Obsidian was one of them (outside of a few romances that didn't let you be gay but that seems different somehow)

Edit: er, I guess New Vegas had a tiny bit with the perks like Confirmed Bachelor

Still not really a huge loss IMO

Yeah... I'm done bring called 'extreme' by calling out unacceptable comments.

I already suggested an actually pretty easy workaround gamedevs could use but this got me accused of not liking art that's true to life, with, like, a whole-ass rant about how I don't like things that are Raw and True, like you can suss that out about me based on me liking games to be *checks notes* true to life.

I know some people think that non-binary identities happened due to Covid lockdown boredom but there are cultures where what we consider nontraditional identities have just been a thing since as far back as they remember, to say nothing of the fact I've been having discourse about nonbinary identities since almost as far back as I remember being a leftist, which was long before Covid era.

My only problem with non-binary people is that they want to change the language, I'm a foreigner, it's difficult for me to speak/write English, even worse when you have to pay attention to this kind of thing.

Yeah I'm totally okay with people having some issues. I'm not really fully on board myself.

I just find it weird when people act like it's some existential threat and the most important issue in their life that other people are non-binary.

And especially when it's literally just a game option like here lol

Gif þu hæfst wæstm mid spræcum þe onhlypæ, ongynne sprecen Ænglisc.

Languages change all the time. 1000 years ago, people who speak English would know exactly what I said. And yes, it's still English. It's Old English.

Yes, no problem with that in games, especially when it's a character creator choice.
Avowed is going to be a great game
