Avowed

My concerns regarding Avowed
Aside from the usual woke stuff like unneeded and unwanted neo-pronouns, there are a few other things about Avowed that concern me.

Why the move from having 11 classes (Pillars of Eternity & Deadfire) to just 3 skill trees? We lost so many good and fun classes in the process that were well-liked by many players.
We lost access to Druid, Chanter, Cipher, Priest, Paladin, Barbarian, Rogue and Monk. Many of these classes were a lot of fun to play around and build with, not to mention the RP possibilties you had.

Will we see the return of these classes in an eventual Pillars of Eternity 3 or is Avowed's style what we have to expect from Obsidian in the future? Because, quite frankly I much prefer the complexity of a real party-based RPG with RTwP/turn-based combat over action combat.

Also, how do Pillars and Deadfire tie into Avowed's story or is it completely independant? Does Avowed take place before, during or after the Pillars of Eternity games?

Will the game still feel like an actual RPG or will it be just an action game with dialog and story?

Yep. My thoughts exactly. Monk with his wounds mechanics was my favourite class. Ciphers were awesome too. But Obsidian decided to go for some Skyrim clone, Bethesda tier level garbage.
It's so funny and sad at the same time - they create awesome Deadfire, it initially underperforms, so they decide to make a game better fitting for a lowest common denominator. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Baldur's Gate 3 comes out and its sales are great. Meanwhile, Josh Sawyer says that Deadfire had a very good slow burn and in the end it sold well.
I bought Pillars of Eternity Adventurer Edition, and I was the fan of the universe ever since. But this is where they lost me as a fan.

It is incomprehensible that Ciphers were pulled from the game. It is one of the most unique and fun classes ever produced in RPGs.

I watched Mortismal's video on his thoughts after playing for 10 or so hours. He said that abilities of classes such as ciphers wouldn't "translate" as well into the new game formula. And that there are only two playable races because it would be too much effort to implement for example "shorter" folks, like dwarves. All of that sounds like a copium to me.
Basically - game had to be dumbed down in devs' opinion. I hope that at least some of them are silently weeping looking at BG 3 sales numbers, regretting changing the formula of the newest game set in Eora.

Yeah, it definitely feels strange, especially as one of our companion characters seems to be a dwarf.

I just hope Avowed is an exception and Obsidian will return to isometric RTwP/turn-based games. Baldur's Gate 3 and Owlcat's Pathfinder games & WH 40K: Rogue Trader prove that isometric party-based RPGs are viable.

I'll likely give Avowed a try eventually, but my expectations for the game are pretty low at this point.

I don't know. As an Old-School D&D guy I prefer fewer classes. The standard four human classes have worked for me for decades. That's mostly because sitting around planning Character generation/builds doesn't appeal to me. I just want to get into the game. That said I do know people love that "crafting a build" aspect of the game. Maybe we'll see some expansions/mods with new character classes in the future...
