Agreed, I actually liked it as well. Game looks beautiful, there is plenty to explore, the story is interesting so far, combat feels good, and I haven't really seen any blatant wokeness. Maybe a few too many feisty female characters, but not in a bothersome way imo.
To be fair I think it's biggest problem is also the best thing about it - it's very Obsidian. If you're a fan of their games you'll enjoy it, if you're not it's unlikely to do anything that'll change your mind.
I'm level 9 and completed every quest, treasure map, side quest, and explored just about 98% of the first zone and interior zones and if the rest of the game is anything as good as this then I am SUPER HAPPY.
I never played Outer Worlds but if their format was like this then I might. The game is not an open-ended MMO or game like Skyrim where you literally can go anywhere and everywhere you want. They open you up to a zone, and a HUGE one at that (IMHO) and once you've completed that then you're on to the next zone, the story unfolds more and you follow the whole plot down the road. I don't mind it... at all. It's freedom enough where you can go off track and explore a ton of other places (in that zone) and yet not get too off-track and side-tracked that you totally forget what you're even purpose is or what you're doing.
Skyrim was like that and while I've got 500+ hours in that game in all editions including VR (which is AMAZING) I still haven't come close to beating the main storyline.. Not EVEN CLOSE. Why? Because it's tooo damn open and widespread. It's so easy to get lost and pickup some other quests you've not seen yet and before you know it you're totally lost and in another part of the world and have totally forgotten what the main quest was... meanwhile you're level 35+ and the main quest is too easy now for you.... ugh! Which sucks when the challenge is gone.
I actually like this format a lot here and the balance as a result is top notch (I'm playing on HARD or whichever is one down from Path of the Damned). People complain that stuff doesn't "respawn" . man it's not supposed to! It would actually be stupid to respawn and people could just farm stuff all day long and that would also mess up the balance. This isn't the game for it, and it's totally fine without it.
Anyways, enough said, but I'm 100% loving the game. Every time I sit down and play, it's so easy to get lost in the world and it's really really enjoying and fun exploring. Super fun.
Peace out!
PS - Already looking forward to the next play-through on Path of the Damned AND WITH MODS!!! Have you seen the NEXUS yet!? Game isn't even out a week and they've already got a ton of mods for this game... heck yah!
It definitely has that Obsidian feel, in the story and writing, but probably most importantly, the dialogue choices. When you want to be stupid, or funny, or sarcastic or whatever makes sense, there will be a dialogue option for that. And when you're talking to a complete ahole and they piss you off so much, at the end of the conversation you can just go, "well, I'm going to kill you now". That's what has made their games so good for me always.
(Side note, that is still my favourite memory of Pillars of Eternity 2. Got to close to the end, all the factions are together for some kind of meeting to discuss what needs to happen, and everyone is just fighting and insulting each other and I can't get anywhere with them (it's important stuff! We're trying to save the world here people!). I was up to them playing as the overall good guy, helping out everyone and not really choosing a side. Got so frustrated and pissed off during that meeting, I just went f it, killed all of them, joined up with the pirates and went to go save the world.)
Haahha great story and I don't remember that even... must not have made it that far yet but yes that's what I love about these games. Good times!
But things like the enemies not respawing. That's a pretty standard cRPG thing. And I like it. It makes me feel like I'm having an impact in this world. (Side note, that's why I never really liked Borderlands for example; everything resets; nothing I do matters.)
The actual consequences for choices are also starting to show themselves now. I'm seriously considering restarting right now, for the second time actually, just because I forgot to do something towards the end of the second map which I suspect actually had a big impact on things. And I feel dumb for forgetting to do what I wanted and don't have a save. So I'm very curious, and crazy enough to start over after 36 hours just to see.
This game might not have all the bells and whistles the average gamer seems to want, but to me at least it has those things that make games really great.
The AI and physics are worse than games over 20 years old.
Art style does not fit the setting.
Its not underestimated at all.. its just rejected by most because there are better alternatives, no matter if the are new ir old
I'm totality.
Your gut instinct was right. The conversation around the game because of culture war bs had made it a pain to discuss, but this is very average similar to Outer Worlds and feels like they stripped back even more on the reactivity from that game if you're willing to compare them. Ever time combat starts up, my mind wanders off to, "Man, I wish I was replaying Dark Messiah instead."
I'll be honest, I didn't either; but after playing it (And I was almost certain I was gonna hate it - and only played as a result of gamepass), I actually love the game. It's genuinely the most fun I've had with a game in a long, long time.
The game runs smooth as silk, looks very nice and, referencing my above comment on it being (for me) a casual game, the combat, spells and skill system are functional without being overly complex. I already have more complex games if I am in the mood for a bigger challenge.
