Avowed Is A Shallow Experience Claims TheGamer review
When you say a game is ‘unfinished’, it conjures up very specific images. Ones filled with flat textures, blank NPC faces, clipping through walls and floors, and a general bugginess blockading your every move. Despite Avowed director Carrie Patel warning players of “jank”, this is not the way Avowed is unfinished. It is unfinished on a deeper, and unfortunately far less fixable, level than simply needing a couple of weeks to work out the kinks.

Every avenue you explore in Avowed feels like a dead end. It’s a game that strives for a depth it cannot achieve, but has overcommitted to that depth. At one point I spoke with a council, and both members were dismissive of my plan.. Privately, one of them found me afterwards to admit it was a ruse and plot against the other. I told the other and… she didn’t believe me. Nothing changed, it was the illusion of role-playing inside a set narrative. Another time I had no choice but to fight characters marked as ‘Desperate Smugglers’ before reaching the top of their camp and discovering these smugglers were desperate, at which point I had the option - which was really an obligation - to help them instead. There are dozens of examples of this, big and small, across Avowed.

Chris Avellone was one of the industry's giants and greatest writers in it. Shame that Obsidian decided to shove him into the mud and hold him there and replaced him with far less talented people to fill diversity quotas.

It is apparently a very shallow, very boring and repetitive game.

That is what lots of people say. But some people like the repetitive Action console play.
This game is not really an RPG however.

Obsidian have also restricted reviewers on what they can show.... this is insane.. putting extra embargo on certain things, that take away all credability of the reviews posted.

His talent is still unrivaled. We need him back doing more games even if it's not Obsidian's.

Chris Avellone is a RPG LEGEND!
Not only is he innocent of the accusations levied against him, but everything he touched was like it got guilded.

Obsidian has yet to make another Pillars 1 since they ejected him. Deadfire was garbage in comparison to the original.

Him, with Jeremy Soule for the soundtrack.
2 geniuses that got haded a terrible hand due to politics when they were actually innocent.

We need Chris Avellone back. Period.

He is completely freelance.. he will never go work for Obsidian again after the hell they put him through... I understand him.. People with merit have been hunted in this business and made out to be devils...

So now you are left with less meritted people to do the writing.
Then again.. with how big companies work, I would not be surprised if they are just having AI do it.
Just read the latest interview with Mark Rosewater, and you will see the state of modern western Fantasy writting, why it is all so shallow and terrible.

I agree. It is total mismangement and he was a victim of a surge of witchhunting.

Instead of Chris Avellone, now you got Andrew Busch lmao. The absolute state of the industry

Busche is directing Baldur´s Gate 4 now with a budget over 200m.

Some aggregator site doesn't care for it, you Mortismal and FextraLife gave solidly positive reviews. Gee, wonder who has more credibility among fans of RPGs.......

Mortismal has zero credibility

That's what I mean, a man like Andrew Busch that only directed the flop that was Veilguard and sims games gets 200m to direct a sequel to a massive IP. Chris Avellone ought to be the man to have that opportunity, not for his sake, but for the sake of Baldur's gate fans!

I understand. This is why BG4 will not do well.. it will most likely not be a cRPG but instead a shallow Action Adventure.. The problem is that board members of corporations have little knowledge and experience with actual game development or what audience their gobbled up game studios cater to.

Seems like the game is a solid 5/10

We don't know if they're the director or if Skeleton Key is making Baldur's Gate 4, just they Skeleton Key hired them and that they're working on games for Wizards.

What, like Pathfinder, Divinity II, Weird West, Into the Breach and all the other games he's worked on or is working on?
