Ohh well. Another flop.
And now, many years later, these studios are a named shell with barely any of the original staff and are run by mega-corps who executives and shareholders who probably not only don't play video games, but actively hate them.
They just want a return on investments and/or sociopolitical maneuvers for even better investment deals.
I didn't realize Dungeon Siege was made by Obsidian though... ugh.... they have some dark marks on their past...
What's funny is they tried to go the Larian independent route and then just give up instead of fighting like Larian did. Now one's a laughing stock and the other is setting standards. Nothing makes me chuckle more than when people tell Obsidian they coulda been Larian and gleefly chose not to.
Can we stop with this false narrative?
Chris quit FIVE YEARS before all the lawsuit stuff. This false narrative that Obsidian threw him under the bus is ridiculous.
He and Brian Fargo had creative differences. That's all that happened between Chris and Obsidian. Chris got screwed by a ton of companies but not them. A handful of people talked about things they had seen him do at cons but it wasn't actually accusations of what the lawsuit entailed.
It's kind of funny how the youtube grifters keep getting identical "insider information" that completely fits their agendas and never have any actual proof.
I think Matt's comments have proven it's probably quite toxic though.
1 Good devs left
2 Replaced with talentless activist
3 Studio become toxic
4 Making ♥♥♥♥♥ games
5 Insulting players fans and players on social medias
6 Game flops
7 Insulting fans and players for the flop
And for your next game take from the step 4, rinse and repeat.
Always the same circle.
A lot of Blizzard's problems from later WoW to Overwatch weren't due to activists but due to a mix of old management and new hires who'd been trained in newer development processes that didn't fit how Blizzard ran things.
It's a combination of studios growing too big and the senior execs not passing down their values and experience to the newer blood properly.
And publishers simply not caring about the welfare of employees. They'd rather replace senior employees with cheaper new hires to save a buck.
It's the real reason Avellone left Obsidian. He didn't feel appreciated there by management any more.
Avelonne was a top writer, his work was always a masterclass, maybe he was too good for Obsidian.
And as far as I heard Avelonne isn't even a conservative guy. But maybe he's not woke enough for Obisidian, not woke like Hansen or Sawyer.
From post mortems on Pillars of Eternity 1's development, he seems to have really but heads with several senior managers. Primarily when he wanted more resources devoted to his character of Grieving Mother that simply weren't within the game's scope and budget.
He and Brian Fargo seem to have had a major clash of personality and for a while Chris loved to slag off on Brian over at rpgcodex codex (when it had an open nazi mod which people try to use to paint Chris as a nasty person.), Brian in turn really painted Chris as being difficult to work with and tried to pin a lot of overall issues on Chris specifically.
He definitely seems to have become somewhat more conservative since he got love bombed by the right after the false allegation drama but a lot of people who try to paint him as right wing mostly look at his characters as "proof."
Failing the big reading comprehension that you're not actually supposed to agree with most of his characters. A chief component of most of them is they are hypocrites.
Thanks for all those infos, I really like Chris and his work and have a huge respect for him, never was disapointed with him I hope he will be back in the industry, he really have a unique touch in his writing.
And honestly I don't even care if he vote left or right as long as he's doing a good job, I never felt he was trying to preach or to try to be an activist when he was writing (compared to those guy at Bioware or Obsidian now), he was just writing cool stuff, Fallout 2 or New Vegas were amazing, even Prey was a blast.
Remember when the left was actually representing the working class ?!
Just look at it NOW.
