Political, Politics, LGBTQ+ = AVOID at all costs
WOW... it's like these developers never learn. This is not what sells a game. This game was so promising, and now I'm absolutely going to be avoiding it at all costs. Shame...

If Steam/Valve "censor" this, it's because they clearly have no respect for the freedom of expression and opinion. (we'll see how long this lasts)

Anyway, Fallout New Vegas is a deeply political game and its politics are applicable to real-world politics, and it's a better game in part because of it, and there are multiple games that are like it in that respect.
Can you imagine RoboCop without real-world politics? I know I'd rather not.
It wouldn't have been half as much of a classic if it didn't have ♥♥♥♥ to say about our future.

That is a very far stretch.
The premise of New Vegas was. Who shot me in the F'in head.

The choices are do you want to help the New Republic "aka good guys but shady", Help Ceasers legion "Homicidal maniacs who like crucifying people for fun" Or work with Mr Big to keep New Vegas independant "even though he is just a computer running things now and has his own agenda".
That is about as Political as hey Mario you wanna go save the princess in the castle or let her rot there with the spiky lizard?

You are looking far more into it then needs be its a game let it just be a game.
I guess Samus from metroid represents corporate greed since she is a bounty hunter.
Lara croft represents the colonial white man taking things from native populations
And Bayonetta represents the sexual nature of Christianity.

And yes while there were trans character in new vegas that is actually a normal thing to have in post apocalyptic games and movies.
Look at all of the trans and gay characters in the mad max films.
The Wasteland is a very accepting place so long as you just walk away because to many folks on both sides have already died just walk away and you will be unharmed.
Gotta get that Petrol!

Does this make the Mad Max films LGBT+++++++++?
No it makes it a normal movie.
Just like it should be seen as normal instead of crying from the rooftops about sexuality which really doesn't matter one way or the other.
Tell me that you don't really understand politics without telling me you don't understand politics.

I'm gonna get into some stuff and I'm not even going to bring up the LGBT stuff at all (well, I will bring up some LGBT stuff, but not the pure existence of LGBT characters in the game).

Each of the factions is indicative of an ideology. The NCR is a recreation of the US, trying to rebuild the country that was destroyed in effigy. But more importantly, the NCR is neo-liberal. It expands and colonizes like any imperial force, ostensibly making things better for (some of) the locals but doing so in self-interest and often with deep negative consequences down the line, to say nothing of the way that it forces the locals to live by their social mores or suffer.

They *seem* good, but they are, as you note, shady, because they're beset by all the same corruption and bureaucratic troubles that the US was, and they're ultimately a cancer. Like the two-headed bear on their flag, they're directionless, yet voracious.

Their apparent polar opposite are the Legion, which are explicitly authoritarian. Domineering, conquering, shamelessly using violence in order to establish their law. In the words of Publius Tacitus, "They plunder, they slaughter, and they steal: this they falsely name Empire, and where they make a wasteland, they call it peace."

Then we've got House, who's a pretty typical right-wing libertarian.

This isn't just a struggle between "Good and Evil," though on some levels it is also that. This is a fight to decide the nature of life in the Mojave wasteland in the future. That is politics - the decision of who is going to set the rules (IE policy) in the years to come. And Obsidian knows that.

To say nothing of the fact that the games' DLC is sledgehammering you in the face with the weight of its actual message.

Not everything has to be a political meaning.

So what are Dig Dugs political motivations?
Is he just drilling for Oil?

You really want to be on the side that claims we're all "consume slop, then wait for next slop" mindlessly, and then turn around and not even examine the media you consume.

The stuff I've stated about New Vegas isn't even subtext, it's text.

No I am all for well written and polished video games.
But not everything has to have a deep political or social meaning.
Sometimes things should just be taken at face value for entertainment.

To me it is funny how year after year folks try their best to make past media mean what the new trend is.
There are youtube videos out there that try and convince everyone that He-man "prince Adam" is gay.
It doesn't mean that it is true.

Right now, we're talking about New Vegas.

You're right that not every game has to have a deep political meaning.

But a lot more of them than you seem to suspect, do.

He needs it to have a political meaning otherwise it's not relatable. Everything is about politics with this guy

The real answer is simply that I find that analyzing the media I consume not only improves how it hits, but is in itself an enjoyable way of interacting with media to begin with. I find actually engaging with the story and reading between the lines to be part of the fun.

Being accused of "over analyzing" media like it's some kind of insult is genuinely mind-boggling to me.

Funny how you ignore the countless games with everything above in them that succeeded like BG3, Elden Ring, Overwatch, etc. Stop being a chud.

Modern politics, LGBT in Elden Ring ? Lol yeah sure.

BG3 is a woke game but you can also play an anti woke if you want and kill the characters you don't like.

Overwatch is a casual game.
Avowed is the same as BG3 in that regard.

I think sometimes people can analyze things and see meaning that wasn't meant to be there (and yes, I'm aware of the death of the author for anyone going to mention that) but in the case of Fallout games, especially New Vegas, I think it's pretty overt.

I mean, the game starts with finding who shot you but then it becomes a question of what government should control the region, what ideology you support - which is pretty clearly political.

It's definitely not meant as a good vs evil story because it intentionally cut that mechanic from the game, and although Caesar's Legion is pretty terrible nobody else is really 'evil' and they even get a very charismatic leader to try to sell you on their ideals.

Fallout 3 or something is a different story, the evil guys in that are just stupid and evil and genocidal with no attempt at persuading the player realistically. But New Vegas? Nah there's something there.

HOW DARE YOU SPEAK OF THE CONCLAVE IN SUCH A WAY!

No I did not write that with a straight face and yes I understand they are abhorrent.
