on steam maybe but POE made about 700K sales and Josh Sawyer said that the second game did worse
The Outer World however sold 5 millions copies
MS does not want cRPG´s as they are not popular with mainstream and hard to play on console.
The issue is that the AAA market have been flodded with the same 3 genres (action shooters, action adventure and sport games) for ages now... its the safe bet, as even bad games would still make a profit. But times are changing.
We also have decent amount of a and aa cRPG developers.
PoE2 was an A title, not AA or AAA
This game is an action adventure with light RPG elements and its console centric
Doesn't need to have a gigantic production value and I would bet even crowdfunding would work again.
A game like outer wilds can easily played casually. Pillars of Eternity is not a casual game.
You gotta focus on the story and read every passage to know what's going on.
I still have my hopes for a Pillars 3.
BG3 lit the world on fire. I think that's a pretty strong case for the big publishers to take another look at the CRPG genre. Especially if they own a studio renown for making them.
Larian games are especially targetted to casual players which is nice for them , they sell more.
Even DOS2 sold more copies than Wrath of the Righteous or Pillars of Eternity. Games that modernized classic CRPGs yet kept that same touch of OG Baldur's Gate games.
I do still hold hope that we will get some great AA Crpgs from other studios, considering Baldur's Gate 3 was released last year, it should take some 2-3 more years to see the bubble grow for Crpgs.
