The game may have a "default table" logic - perhaps choose the nearest one, or a table within an influence zone near the kitchen platform. This works well for the pre-built room and furniture layouts. But may not in custom builds. (Is your home/room custom built?)
Try this as a test. Replace the dresser or any table they use to place cooked food plates with a dinning table or a table of your choice (using the house build interface). Move the dresser they use, away to another location. If they start using the newly placed table, it is probably a "place the plate zone" logic. You can then customise the room furniture layout to your choice. If they seek the previous, now moved dresser, the cause for their attachment to that particular piece of furniture is puzzling. Either way, it is a story for the feedback channel on discord.
Perhaps placing the plates and in-bag items on a particular piece of furniture, is an influence zone relative to the room layout or the kitchen platform, and works well with the pre-built room and furniture layouts.
