The maps don't really vary in objective: rout the enemy/defeat commander with passive enemy AI that lets you turtle/deathball, sometimes with NPCs you need to protect. The only highlight would be the penultimate chapter, where goblins are rushing an exit point you need to defend. 3 to 4 movement ranges for the majority of the game also makes it a bit of a slog.
Progression is completely linear, defined characters with level gated active/passive skill unlocks (also a ton of skill overlap) and max Arts Points (AP) or Magic Points (MP) increases to cast physical/magical skills. Everyone outside Goblin Slayer's party also unlocks things by guild rank, which is a finite resource you can distribute until post-game. There's 30 or so "generics", some of which are mutually exclusive based on what story-requisite filler missions you complete, but you can just use Guild Master and Goblin Slayer's parties for the entire game. Some gear is also mutually exclusive from those filler missions, but it'll probably be obsolete by the next chapter or two via gear you can buy.
The game does let you set up traps before the battle begins, and most melee characters can push enemies into them for %-based damage/ailments, but it's not necessary at all. Besides the final boss, mages were pretty strong due to being 2 range and hitting a lower MDF stat for bigger damage than melee.
10 chapter main story + requisite filler missions + handful of side quests. Post-game lets you beat the filler missions you missed, unlocks a new side quest, and unlocks an optional 20 floor dungeon that lacks any story relevance.
Worth it for SRPG veterans not looking for anything ground-breaking, just a solid SRPG with good storyline?
Then again, I can't comment on the story/characters since I beat it without knowing Japanese, so I was speaking purely from a gameplay perspective: it'll be easy and repetitive for SRPG vets even on the harder Adventurer difficulty. I was actually waiting on the English localization, but I may need to buy the game again if they don't patch it in for the JP Switch/Steam version.
At the very least, dialogue scenes are lengthy enough and it's not a rehash of the source material, but entirely new stuff focused on Guild Master/Blood Princess. Priestess is still Obsidian rank, so I think it'd be canonically before the end of LN Vol. 7 / Anime S2 E4 / Manga Ch. 75 if you're not caught up.
must have a limited mind when there are only 26 ratings
;-(
So my only hope of getting those is to give in and buy a switch?

The official Twitters haven't said anything regarding patching in English language for the Steam version or Japanese physical Switch copies, and we're 3 week away.

https://twitter.com/RedArtGames/status/1846204628158853143 (English publisher's, who waited like 3 months to advertise Sword Maiden's included with the Collector's Edition, that is either Q4 2024 or Q1 2025.)
In fact, the original press release never even mentioned the Steam version, just Switch.

Thanks for update. As mentioned it was only an assumption steam would follow the switch release date. Completely acknowledge it’s not guaranteed. Guess we’ll see on November 15th (although I expect to be fully into DQIII then)
Guessing they don’t care for the Steam version. What a shame.
It is interesting how the Switch release is much cheaper than the Steam release, even before the discount.
