Thanks for the post!
What that trailer looks like is that they purposely zoomed across some water on the island to get to that second area (to make it look like we are on separate islands) where supposedly the other player is playing, what this does is make it look like we are on separate islands but It feels more to me that we are on the same island.
If you pause the video at the right moment, you can see that it's just a 'bay' that they zoom across, it's still connected with land to the island.
I suppose this is necessary though for those that will be playing PVP as I've not seen any controls in any videos I've seen where we would control boats to move our troops across the waters to get to the other players island. And just magically transporting troops would be a game breaker as the player being attacked would not see it coming
Yeah, I fell for it. Now that I'm looking at it more clearly, that little body of water doesn't really divide the land into multiple islands. At first glance I had thought so, but I guess it was just clever marketing on their part.
And also, I just realised, there's a bit that says "... Or claim the island for yourself" Island as in singular. Unfortunate, but I guess that's how they had to do it to make the combat work.
"Multiplayer matches in Tropico 5 will take place on a single island, with large maps separating each player's starting positions with natural feats such as elevation, rocks, lakes, rivers or even peninsulas.
Playing on separate islands would make competitive or cooperative gameplay obsolete as there is no mechanic of inter-island traffic and transportation, nor will this be introcuded in Tropico 5.
To make multiplayer matches interesting, players will not build up their own islands in isolation but rather compete or work together in shaping a single nation. There are may ways to interact with each other, most of which would be pointless if players were to rule their own independent islands."

My reasoning for this is that given what we've seen so far, the islands might be bigger than they were in T4 but they still are not huge by any means so think of 2 dictators with their own little towns on the same small island. It just seems strange to me. Now in competitive play it seems even stranger to me that two dictators would even get to the point of building up substantial buildings to try to keep their population going without having already destroyed the rival dicator on such small islands.
There's probably a reason that many island nations only have one palace for El Presidente on them, it's not likely that a rival faction would be able to build up a palace, movie theater, burlesque show etc on the same island as one that has a dictator already installed on it. It simply wouldn't get to that point.
Of course I realize it's a "game" which is why I make a lot of allowances for strange stuff like this but still...
Competing for the same resources on the same island does seem a little silly. Having your own island and selling resources or products seems much more interesting. I'm wondering if the multiplayer was an afterthought, it doesn't seem like something that was built into it from the beginning. Anyways Like I said we'll know for sure on the 23rd.
You could think of the leaders as just powerful rebels who have given themselves legitimacy. They might call themselves "el pres", but in your eyes they are still just dissidents who annoying own part of what is rightfully YOUR island. CRUSH THEM!
from the trailer shown it seems like there is a decent multiplayer system i saw some options for different game modes and a browse games tab so it should be quite decent
