Well Haemimont Games is actually the developer, and they have a fairly good history, but are mostly known in europe. Most of their Rome games are pretty good. They also made Celtic Kings which is a fun dumb strategy game. And Rising Kingdoms got a really bad reception because of Starcraft comparisons but taken as it's own game it was pretty good and still has something of a cult fanbase playing it multiplayer, a bit unfairly recieved IMO.
The only games I'd say they really screwed up were The First Templar and Tropico 4, and I'd only say they screwed up Tropico 4 because they released it way too damn similar to Tropico 3 to justify being called a sequel, but after the DLC it became more easy to justify buying a bundle pack.
If this gets good reviews it might be worth buying just to support the genre.
I hear this a lot, XXX are the developer Kalypso are only the publisher. IMO Kalypso are responsible for testing the product, decision when to release, and in what state the game is released - therefore it doesnt matter a damn who the developer is. Some developers may be a lot better than others at producing a stable well designed game but all I see is Kalypso on the label and that is an automatic no buy for me. And the more people who follow my lead and stop buying from rubbish publishers, the better the games market would most certainly become. The state of AAA games releases is at its worst, I dont buy games from those people, and you shouldnt either if you want to buy good games in the future.
Why can't people stop finding things to complain about and instead be happy that IT'S A NEW FREAKING TROPICO AND EL PRESIDENTE IS BACK!
Kalypso is just a publisher aren't they?
And they didn't do right by Tropico 4. If you ever played Tropico 3, then when Tropico 4 first came out the first thing you would have noticed is that it was the same damn game with new maps. It was at best an expansion pack being sold as a whole new game.
Because there are things to complain about and if everyone just blindly ignores them that allows things to only ever get worse and worse with absolutely no push back, it's bad for gamers and it's bad for the entire industry for everyone to just accept crap and never complain.
Look at it this way, Tropico 3 was just them testing the waters of city sim/political sim, having bought the franchise. Thus Tropico 4 was the tepid venturing out (as in they tried things in the game the original Tropico didn't have).
So now knowing that the game is popular, and they can execute well their own ideas, they have gone big with Tropico 5. Given the predictability of this franchise (fun base game, good bug free release, one “must have” DLC and then a bunch of fluff DLC) I saw no reason to hold off on pre order
They've probably learned their lesson with Tropico 5 and one look at the features list has my mouth watering but there is that history to be aware of.
Not really. Tropico 4 was the most blatant copy paste job I have ever seen, everything about it, the graphics, the buildings, the building icons, the stats, the Dictator creator, everything was exactly the same except Tropico 4 had a few new maps. That was it pretty much when it first came out, it was the only time I ever felt ripped off by anything Tropico.
Normally when something sells as a whole new game they've at least reskinned everything, they didn't even do that.
Also I heavily prefer Tropico 4 to Tropico 3.
First of all, agreed.
Secondly; Name one company that developes city sims to this qaulity that isn't along the lines of: "YOU FUOND CUOL! GAU FUELZ DA TURNKZ WAT IT UND BLEW UPZ DA WURLD!!!!111". It is one of the few companies that actually looks at this type of game and in my opinion, they do it well.
If you can name 6 city MANAGEMENT sims, to this quality, I will consider myself 1 up-ed.
We're not only the publisher but also the IP owner.
Simcity, Casear, Anno, Startopia, Settlers, Dwarf Fortress, Final Fantasy: My life as a King, and my personal favorite Afterlife, which is a game where you run heaven and hell.
Ah, but aren't the developers a different company?
