Tropico 5
Can the camera get any lower or is it locked? i can't see my Tropicans
How can i get right up close to the ground, like in Tropico 3 and 4?

The current camera is a little frustrating as i am restricted to about 4-5 metre top down view, i want to be able to get to ground/street level.

Is there some setting or a Text file i can edit?
Is there possibly a developer camera option like most games have hidden in their files that unlock the camera restrictions effectivly giving a free to clip camera? like NoClip?

I have no doubts in my mind that we will see a reduction in performance on maps that are more populated, but if it's too much of a reduction in performance I would imagine that we could simply stop zooming *all* the way out like shown in the screenshot.

I don't think it affected the game that I saved after installing the mod and trying it on a saved game, still seems okay, no noticeable issues with that save.

Well, when I first tried it on an existing save at first I thought that I could zoom in and out further, it sure felt like it, but it wasn't until I started a new game that I really noticed the difference. In the new game with the current close zoom I go under the ground, where as on the existing save when I tried it, it felt closer if I was to re-angle the camera to where I felt like I was almost on street level, but it wasn't until I started a new game that I saw just how low this mod allows me to really zoom in (and out) so maybe a placebo effect when you tried it on the existing save and thought it worked?

Either way, sure is nice having that whole island overview, with the mouse that I use with smooth fast scrolling it allows me to quickly zoom out, find what I want and then zoom in to where I place the cursor without having to scroll around the island to find what I'm looking for.

I'm starting to think that the saved game writes the data in the CommonLua folder into the saves so that it's always available even if we remove the mod. I'd have to check that to be sure but I'm feeling a bit lazy this morning.

Performance - probably/might see a performance hit. I'm not entirely sure, because all the data's written to your VRAM and RAM if you have massive zoom out or not, so we'll wait and see. Definitely will see an impact on performance with the new 'pop cap'.

Placebo effect - yeah, I had thought that was the case! XD It did zoom out a *lot* more though when I had first installed the file into CommonLua in the base directory. I could see about 50% of the island and I was way above, way above the mountains. Also, I can jump in and out of game and adjust the camera movement speed (scroll speed), start game, reload save and scroll speed is as I set it. I stuck it at 5 once to check I wasn't going mad and the camera was moving v-e-r-y slowly. It did work, I'm sure of it (Rich takes another Placebo Pill..), yes, I'm sure... lol

Oh yeah! Being able to zoom out and in to the other side of the island in one smooth move is good, very good. Admittedly, when it worked, I could only go most of the way across the island and I have set it higher now, so will be ready when I start a new game. Not as high as yours though, only 12000. XD I had 8000.

CommonLua folder! Ooh, yes, I'll have a look at that right now. You've raised my curiosity on that one...

I take it you're in the States, as you wrote ..."morning." Well, have a good day!

Edit: City, I tried decompiling, but ran into this exception for both files:

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.IllegalStateException: The input file does not have the signature of a valid Lua file.
at unluac.parse.BHeader.<init>(BHeader.java:37)
at unluac.Main.file_to_function(Main.java:56)
at unluac.Main.main(Main.java:34)

You were referring to the lua's in AppData? In the user made CommonLua, nothing gets added, at any time, please correct me if I'm wrong. I also checked lua.hpk, a played one vs. a fresh install (the contents were identical) just in case and at the moment I can't decompile a save file, yet. There is some text in there, as is, but nothing pertaining to what we're doing.

Ideas, City?

I'm feeling a bit lazy this morning.

Not dissimilar to me, except I'm feeling a bit lazy this decade...

Edit 2:
Tried adding mod on freshly installed game, huge zoom out does not work on existing save.
Tried starting new game, huge zoom out working. Immediately loaded old save, huge zoom not working.

Edit 3: Huge zoom out does not make you any more attractive to members of the opposite sex, quite the opposite in fact, as my other half will testify to, "Is THAT what you've been doing for the past couple of hours!?" Doh!

It works on an existing save game!

Caveat: it won''t work on the level you're on, but will start working when you start a new level.

So, either restart the level you're on, or wait till the next level starts. That's if you want to continue with the game you're on.

This is pretty much necessary if you want to play on a 3-monitor resolution. Change MaxZoom to 25000 if you're using 3 monitors. Then you can finally see. Thanks everyone.

I havn't tried this or played with the settings but you could try something like this...

Go to your tropico5 installation folder, in there create a new folder "CommonLua" in that folder create a new file "whatever.lua". So you end up with ..\Tropico5\CommonLua\whatever.lua

In the whatever.lua you could try: (adjust the settings you want)

OnMsg.ClassesPreprocess = function()
const.DefaultCameraRTS = {MinHeight = 12, MaxHeight = 40, HeightInertia = 4, MoveSpeedNormal = 40, MoveSpeedFast = 60, RotateSpeed = 6, LookatDist = 40, LowRotationRadius = 40, HighRotationRadius = 40, CameraYawRestore = 0, UpDownSpeed = 230, MinZoom = 800, MaxZoom = 8000, BBox = box(point(0, 0, 0), point(0, 0, 0))}
end

Thank you so much for the camera mod. The game was unplayable for me without it. Especially the move speed and minimum zoom.
For anyone having trouble I found the following quirk. For some strange reason the name of the .lua file does seem to matter. I had a problem getting it to work and after some extensive, time consuming and frustrating trial and error I found the following: I created the file "camera.lua" which didn't seem to work but simply renaming the file "camera-zoom.lua" and it did.

It's bizarre and I've no idea why the name of the file mattered but thought I'd report that. It's almost like the file required a minimum number of characters in its name!

Many thanks for posting the mod. The camera undoubtedly needed a lot of fixing.

*May be* because there is a file called 'camera.lua' in the game files...

Can't be bothered to check... lol
Probably, but I was tearing my hair out until figuring this out so I thought I'd post for the benefit of all! :)

end

Awesome! Worked for me
Does anyone know how to edit the min/max angle though?
Id like the camera to be able to show a 'level with the ground' shot and a 'top down' shot
yes the code worked for me also... My last problem is the scroll speed when I hit arrows or edge of screen with mouse. I've put the lowest setting in game menu but the image still moves too fast when I hit arrows. How can I decrease the speed of scrolling speed?
after some tweaks I finally managed to get a decent camera. I dunno if others might find these settings usefull aswell (you need to get used to them), but with theese settings I can get that sattelite view, while in the same time I can get the street feeling of my island with the height movement (while pressing the middle mouse button, push the mouse forward or press up or down arrow from keyboard). My setting inside game the General>Gamelay>Scroll Speed is set to MINIMUM. And the script for my camera-zoom.lua is
OnMsg.ClassesPreprocess = function()
const.DefaultCameraRTS = {MinHeight = 4, MaxHeight = 40, HeightInertia = 4, MoveSpeedNormal = 10, MoveSpeedFast = 10, RotateSpeed = 6, LookatDist = 20, LowRotationRadius = 1, HighRotationRadius = 1, CameraYawRestore = 0, UpDownSpeed = 100, MinZoom = 600, MaxZoom = 40000, BBox = box(point(0, 0, 0), point(0, 0, 0))}
end
Also I changed from arrows to WASD as is more easy to move the camera with my left hand while my right is on mouse. With thoose settings the game is playable for me and camera doesn;t move so fast anymore when I move it from keys.
Also my details are on ultra so I can get some nice views while my camera is on street :)

btw you need to adjust
MinZoom = 800, MaxZoom = 8000,

not
