As far as defending against them.. i hav enever had my standing drop that far yet and im in the modern era. so sadly i cant gve you battle advice.
You should not be invaded by Axis and Allies, I think it starts with an invasion from a neighbour island with a peace treaty for a certain number of months, build embassies when you can (after your industry) to increase your relationship with Axis and Allies. You will not be invaded by them if you have good standing.
Whenever you can, use praise in the embassies.
Also do not use the alliance option unless you have a large military, there is no point allying if you have good relationship with both of them and it is not required.
I won with 4 army bases, 2 barracks and the towers that they asked me to build to delay the invasion.
But I don't think it's possible to survive an Allied or Axis invasion. Maybe it is? Just don't let things get so bad that they want to invade you.
So basically, that first invasion is just to scare you into building up your military to an appropriate size before the real invasion arrives much, much later.
Im still trying to find a way to get my deplomatic relations low enough just to get an invasion, it still hasnt happened yet.
Both rebels and invaders like to use roads so you can also use that to get them to flow the way you want.
