How to control an Army during Invasion

So i played the first mission and told england to go ♥♥♥♥ themselfs im not paying 10 grand for independance and they invaded me and i had a star fort, four guard towers and my palace. they send 6 squads of redcoats and i only had two squads. your telling me that a STAR FORT, with four towers and my palace only gives me two squads of soldiers?? what crap is this?? when those squads were killed it still showed on the buildings i had plenty of soldiers left alive arrows pointing at em and everything yet they didnt fight? anyone know how to manage your armies? so this doesnt happend again? I know i had plenty of troops.

When a crosshair icon appears click on the building and make sure you click on "high priority" then it will cause your military to focus on defending the area around that building.

Beware that when you click it it will say "low priority" this gave me the impression that the area was in low priority when in reality it wasn't it just means that if you click on it it turns to that type of priority.

Each fort/army base only give you one squad of troops.
Guard towers don't give you any squads but attack nerby targets.
