Co-op feelings, extremely disappointed
TL;DR, co-op is neither co nor op.

I bought the 2 pack looking forward to a co-op city building campaign that my buddy and I oculd play together, maybe this was expecting too much. Load up the game (after stealing an old graphics card of his, because my dumbass cant read the stickies, or the game requirements), start the campaign, no multiplayer/co-op option.

Fair enough, maybe we expected too much hoping to play through the campaign together, maybe we can just jointly build a city, and go freeform/sandbox on it. the first time we get into game together (why cant we make private lobbies?) we start across map from each other, with "victory objectives", well wait a second, there was an option for co-op or versus, I must've selected the wrong one, because we are on opposing sides from each other, with no clear way to interact.

Restart the game, make sure we are on co-op instead of versus, pick a new island just because. Once we get into the game (not a knock at the loading times, it runs quite smoothly) it's apparent that no part of the "co-operative" gameplay will involve interaction between the two of us, he is on his side of the island, I am on my side, and we still have "team 1 victory points" Ummm, there is only one team.

His fright ships come in on their own schedule, mine come in on their own schedule. He accepts certain missions (such as sell us 3000 lbs of coco), I accept certain missions, on the ocassions that those missions DO overlap, our counters each fill up independently!!

Add to that the unchanging, bullet-fast gameplay (in which we don't have time to properly read the rewards/punishments, a slower option would be nice, if it could pause when dialog is happening would be friggin wonderful), and the complete lack of notification when one of us gets knocked out of the game.. oh and why do all of their buildings and civilians cursedly die upon their leaders flight? ITS A CO-OP GAME, Why dont you let the remaining/surviving partner take over the buildings?

this game has a LONG way to go, I am incredibly disappointed.

My friend bought me the game so we could do co op just like you. It just seems like we are playing a single player game with another player on the other side of the map. Not being allowed to build near your friend is kind of lame too. Best thing about games like AoE is when one of you get taken over and you send villagers to go build up in your friends base. Or starting a base together and actually play CO OP. I am looking forward to changes to make it better.

Tropico 5 multiplayer is not what most of us think of as a multiplayer game. On top of that, they are having big issues they haven't figured out yet. IMHO it is best to read the official forums as that seems to be the best place for up to date, proper information on where they stand on whatever issue.

I bought 2 copies also, one for myself, one for my son. We haven't even bothered to try playing multiplayer yet because of the problems, but mostly because ... and this is what has messed us up ... there is NO SAVE in multi-player mode. That doesn't work well for us. I'm retired so I have time, but my son is 27, works full time, has a part-time job on the side, and likes to go out and "play" on the weekend. He can't commit for hours of gaming these days. So poor mom plays all alone. :(

You did read the update changelog for 1.04 yes? They say they have added saving in multiplayer. I haven't tried it yet but that's what they claim.

SimbaTao - no, hadn't seen update news yet. But thanks for letting me know, and great timing. It's the weekend, maybe I can get my son to give me some play time (how's that for role reversal! lol).

Thanks for bumping this topic.
What is the current state of multi-player? Is it still locked at fastest speed? Can games be saved as suggested in this thread? Looking at friendly cooperative play with my wife so a 2 pack purchase would rest on it being casual friendly.

Buggy lagfest for me when pop reaches over 500 of each person. Both of us on high spec comps with high speed fiber both down and up.

Just poorly optimised. If your buying for the coop, i'd look elsewhere.
