The paused and I decided I'd better save before it crashed. Unfortunatly before I could send the commands to my hand....

Could you please share some more details?
Interesting when the game is actually crashing (e.g. always on start up; when starting a new game; ...)
Additionally could you please share some more details about your system, such as OS+bit, CPU, GPU and RAM to get tghis sorted properly?
Also check if your drivers are up-to-date and you are using a clean install of Tropico 5 with no mods, trainers or any other kind of way you might have altered your game files in any kind of way.

It happens to me and my friend during multiplayer gaming as well, we are starting to feel anxious about getting freezes and crashes every other 5 mins
