I mean in the sense that there is a ticking clock for some quests in the background that I won't see because I didn't do them in the right order? Or am I free to just explore and annex regions as I see fit short of something major coming up like the invitation to a nearby kingdom at the start of gen 3?
1. Cumberland will fall if you don't deal with it as soon as possible. It doesn't actually "disappear" but it will turn into a different quest.
2. Mermaid quest will be gone forever if sunken ship event is triggered. It's also needed to be done by the same male character before another timeskip happens.
Otherwise, you don't really need to worry about timeskip.
However, Some events need timeskip to trigger following up events, You won't be able timeskip anymore once you became the final emperor so I recommend dealing with corsair quest and Volcano of Comroon Island in early game or mid game.
Keep these in mind and you can do missions in different orders.
I guess what I'm saying is don't worry about missing things, unlike in other JRPGs that's the *right* way to play here.
In addition, the mermaid quest always causes a timeskip, and defeating Subier also might cause one.
So in total there is only 15 possible timeskips but usually you don't timeskip capturing your first region meaning its just 14.
And as mentioned in a post above, its only 2 quests that gets affected by the timeskips.
