If you're a player who has more fun with grinding, then don't feel too pressured to play a different way than you like. But if you're doing it hoping to get an advantage, there's better times to do it than with Gerard, like if you want to grind up some cash to build a structure/smith a weapon, or if you think a generation change is coming and you've still got plenty of lightbulbs next to your skills (and you really won't need to grind at any point in this game).
Before Leon dies and mindjacks him, he's a black hole of XP. He learns at something like 70% slower than other characters at level 0-- you can visibly notice the others can gain a new skill at lightning speed compared to him.
After Leon mindjacks him, he's still slightly slower to learn skills than other characters, but is almost functional. He's still a net loss of experience for your party, and *appears* to have a slight damage nerf. Similar statted- characters with the same skill level and weapon will do more damage than him, at least from my limited experiments
End the tutorial immediately and abdicate the moment he takes the throne officially after you kill Kzinissie. You both get a new formation from your new emperor and ditch the dead weight that is Gerard. Your new Emperor can add to the Kingdom's overall skill levels at the normal rate and learn skills at the normal rate.
You unlock abilities, which are a reason to fight battles to learn and master them, improvements like the blacksmith (takes battles to complete, takes battles to forge items, takes a time skip to buy them in shops), the lab (takes battles to finish, takes battles to research mixed spells), etc. Gerard and Leon's story is the tutorial, and there's no reason to stay with the tutorial emperor.
