Grinding levels
It feels like everything I fight isn't getting any weaker no matter how much I grind what am I doing wrong?

Uhn... Well, enemy levels do scale as you grind, but they scale pretty slowly, so you should be able to outscale them.

Are you grinding enemies that give a good amount of TP? Grinding early enemies is a bad idea, you're getting very pitiful amounts of TP for your effort.

Anyways... In early game it's more important to get better gear than to increase your skill levels, so you should probably just focus on clearing more events.

Dang thanks for letting me know that. Might just restart then. Is there a way to play in a more traditional jrpg way? like I don't want to get soft locked for trying to get stronger that just seems dumb.

Just started, had the same feeling, just keep training and learning new skills, make sure to equip weapons to people, I see no reason not to use 2 at all times and force learn new skills.

Don't be shy on your TP skills, they hit hard, also after you hit any monster with its weakness the game will keep that info stored forever, so experiment.

I'm still pretty early on, just defeated my first story 'boss' I assume and it's gotten easier over time, the beginning was rough (on hard/classic difficultly)

Oh, you aren't going to be softlocked, most likely. Like... Enemy Level increases by clearing events and by grinding.

But like... Events are the main thing that increase enemy level. You need 100 battles to increase it without the help of events. It really isn't a big deal.

As long as you aren't trying to do something like... Raising the Skill Levels of all weapons for your characters, you'll be fine. Just focus on a weapon or two (for each character), and on up to 3 spell schools (for each character) and you'll be good.

... But yeah, early game grinding is generally not that useful because it doesn't give much TP, nor do the early game enemies drop anything useful, so it's not recommended to bother with grinding in the early areas.

Grinding stats is rarely super important in Saga Games. It's more about learning useful skills, and getting good new gear. And this game makes learning new skills fairly sensible, compared to stuff like Saga Frontier.

Like, I had a painful brawl with one of the bosses, and the key to beating him was not just getting better stats, but rather just boosting the party's Wind Magic enough to be able to spam Air Screen.

Combat in Romancing Saga will almost always be painful and risky (the exact level of danger depends on the dungeon), but it's about finding the tools you need to overcome it.

Sometimes it's using the right formation. Sometimes, it's about finding the right skills. Sometimes you just need better gear.

First actual good place to grind would be gelid or torrid ruins, enemies there give a good amount more TP gains than enemies in other areas, if you unlock it fairly early. They also drop some nice equipment.

Spells scale good early on because their damage isn't based on weapon attack, and there's some good aoes like stone shower you can spark on the first or 2nd gen. I recommend bringing at least 2 mages for early & mid game. You're not going to get a weapon AOE that beats stone shower for quite a long time, so stuff like stone shower will be your go-to for clearing enemy encounters for most of the game.

Late game you should have spell levels raised across multiple classes enough to use buffs & heals on everyone. Fire wall, light wall, sword barrier, recovery, shadow servant are good to have on any class. No reason why you shouldn't have at least 2 of those on each member of your last emperor party.

Formations that boost speed or lock your turn order are the best ones. For example, if you can predictably act before the enemy every time, that's a huge advantage. Being able to get buffs up before the boss gets to attack you, or fully heal your party on the 2nd turn is the difference between winning and losing.

you can play this game like an normal RPG. Since start of the game, i do exactly that: leveling like any other normal rpg and i dont have any problems.

Also, the monster level is capped depending on the difficulty you play on. So, unless you play the harder modes, you will eventually hit a point where the enemies just won't become any stronger.
In all difficulties the monster level caps at [starting monster level] + 15.

In Casual/Normal/Hard, that means it caps at 16.
In Expert it caps at 32.
In Romancing it caps at 48.

The pace at which the monster level grows is the exact same in all 5 difficulties as well.
