Grinding for stat-ups won't increase your damage reduction, though it can increase health by a bit. Still, the best way to up your damage reduction is armor, and acquiring that is a combination of progressing through the game and paying money to your blacksmiths to design new stuff.
But above all, the best way to avoid damage is to avoid it altogether. In regular encounters, this means getting out of the typical JRPG mindset of conserving your best attacks for bosses -- use that ♥♥♥♥ to kill enemies before they can attack you! Anything that lives can live with a status effect like Blind or Paralyze, or maybe just hit 'em with a stun before they can act. Against bosses, take advantage of your Formation to manage aggro, and if necessary make someone a dedicated tank by spamming a technique like Parry. Lastly, keep an eye on boss turn icons when they have the little red exclamation mark, and if you can't prevent the attack, having everyone Defend to reduce the damage.
All in all, I've not found Classic to be much different than the original game. If enemies hit a bit harder it's largely mitigated by you having more control over turn order, and clearer opportunities to mitigate it.
From what i've read, completing quests increases enemy level. So if you complete quests without killing trash mobs, then you gonna be underleveled at some point.
You're probably on a high rank area. Try exploring other parts of the world and coming back there later. Other parts of the world should have weaker enemies.
... Ah, getting one-shot by the blobs in Avalon Sewers casting Cyclone Squeeze is absolutely normal though. But that's basically the only time I remember one-shots being normal.
Struggled with some of the goblins before, but they seemed manageable. No idea what to do in this sewer.
You should still be able to win the DPS race against them despite the LP loss... And well, you played the original/remaster before, so you know LP loss is not a big deal in this game. So you shouldn't worry too much about them.
... Maybe defending with the front unit of Imperial Cross could work, actually? I honestly didn't try it, but maybe they can survive if they defend.
And yeah, the goblins in the early game were also kinda tough, weren't they? Goblin King was actually one of the toughest bosses in my run! xD
Btw, enemies like the Termite Battlers and the Sorcerer are way less scary in this remake than they were in the remaster. They don't simply one-shot you with their Stone Showers anymore.
So yeah, you don't lose out on anything. Abilities can be learned from any unit of a given class and stuff.
1. one that increase def or shield rate
2. One that let part act before enemy such as Rapid Stream.
Also, don't be shy to use skill/magic for enemy that can one shot you.
Skill/magic that deal critical damage to certain type are very useful early game
Magics in RS2 Remake are quite potent, in particular fusion AoE attacking magics.
