Character creation pointless?

You can choose a character at the beginning, but the game lets you play as the old king. I thought ok, that is the prologue and after that you can play yourself. But no, after the king is dead, you have to play his son which is a fix character. Did I miss something or is the choice of the character at beginning and name total pointless?

That character is the final emperor, you play them during the final part of the game.

It is kinda stupid, but you select your last character at the start of the game and can spend quite a while before you get them.

It is misleading, because usual people play the character most of the time they picked. There have been games where you also play short scenes as another character (in witcher for example), but not the whole time others till the end.

Why would you think they would ask for your input if it wouldn't come up later? I will say that in the original game you see your character in the tavern as the minstrel tells the story so you can piece together it's leading up to you. They changed that in the remake though.

You can briefly see them in the tavern in the opening. They are off to the side so its not as obvious as the original.

Making an early decision that only pays off way later is cool to me. Even Earthbound did it.

it's a game spanning several centuries, so you get to pick an emperor from all the classes you have unlocked whenever you wipe or get a time skip, they all have different abilities, formations and specialise in different weapons and elements

just roll with it, it's fun, you get several different outcomes for certain quests based on either the order you take them in or your actions in them

Dragon Quest 4: not till the final chapter (admittedly its VERY long) do you get the hero character you name.

I get where you'd coming from, OP, but at the same time, SaGa's entire identity is messing with conventions and delivering something unique you don't often, if ever, see! If you're new to the series, the confusion is totally understandable, and if you're a veteran... well, each entry tends to surprise even vets! 🤣 SaGa is almost never the same from one game to the next.

Having played nearly the whole series but not touching RS2 until this version, I was thrown off too, but it was sure a cool moment when the guy I named finally showed up!

After you killed the fourth hero, you will keep playing as the character you chose for rest of the game.
