You can grind on expert, you get a lot better TP gains, enough to max out your weapon/magic levels to 100. Enemy level caps at 32 on expert. I've gotten 25k+ TP from some enemy groups on expert with enemies level 32. Enemies got a lot of HP at level 32, so you need to be doing a huge amount of damage or you'll be in serious trouble, because any attack is going to be doing 600 minimum, if trash mobs get to act they could easily wipe you, so you just can't let them get a turn, like ever.

Gelid Ruins on expert is a great place to grind early on in the campaign.

thinknig he was a normal boss then realizing he was one of the 7 and dying.

yeah he can be killed first gen in classic ( but definitelly not what I would call a 'clean' pass ).
He just die and you get access to the lower areas of the map, including Gelid ruins where each fight rewards with a ton of XP, and you might beat the giant if you have enough stun/sleep lock in your team composition, so you can get the AOE heal spellbook early. there is also a good axe, sword and bow to find there.

What should I do for my first fight? Lose on purpose? or try and beat him in his second form?

It's always worth it to give it a go, in some conditions he kinda spares you and moves on to a different place anyway.

And if you can get his evasions then the fight becomes a lot easier (though for some of his moves you still want to Defend), and the only way to get those is to either find mobs that can give some of them or fight him.

Depends on when you meet him.

FIrst time:

- Will be in first form if you meet him early enough (going by generations)
- Will be in second form if you meet him later (going by generations)

Although regardless of when you meet him he will be a hard battle. The first time you meet him in East Subterrane he will spare you if you lose and the quest will count as completed.

You can meet him in South Subterrane and Ministral's Grotto in Nazelle as well, but if you clear Nazelle fast enough (including Ministral's Grotto), you can keep him at the form you originally met him in.

So, facing him after Gerard's generation is a bad idea? Just as a sort of heads-up., I'd assume.

Technically based on your actions you either face him in a weaker, easier to beat form or a harder form that comes with the possibility of a rare evasion/item drop.
I wouldn't worry too much about it honestly.
Akameka Nov 4, 2024 @ 1:20am
Not really but he won't spare you if you lose to him. Also, he apparently drop very good items if you kill him in his powered forms.

Facing him in any generation is a bad idea unless you keep him from farming Nazelle and then fight him as one of the last.

As FreshMint mentioned, you can always just save before facing him and grind to get the evasion tech of his hit-all charge attack, then die to him and face him later. It'll cost you 1 LP across the board which isn't all that much. Plus you get access to toba and the mu camp.

First appearance is East Subterrane
Possible second appearance is South Subterrane
Possible third appearance is Ministral's Grotto
Definite appearance in Mu Cave

I say possible because those depend on how many generations pass between your first meeting with him and doing the quests for South Subterrane and Ministral's Grotto. He will appear in Mu Cave if you do that quest so be warned.

There's an evasion skill for Headbutt? I know you can get the Skewer and Fissure Strike evasions to save yourself from most of his regular attacks but I've always just defended for Headbutt.

So going by Hiraga III in Somon (the first Hiraga you meet with Gerard), Dantarg's form is when you first meet him (an example):

Hiraga V (two generations (62ish years skipped) after Gerard.. your first non-Gerard Emperor)
- Dantarg is in first Form
Hiraga VIX (six generations (180ish years) after Gerard... your first non-Gerard Emperor)
- Dantarg is in second Form

This is evidenced by the number of monsters in the East Subterrane cave itself. If you got there early enough there should be that Gel Mother-looking monster you fought for the Dragon's Den before just to the left of the path leading to Dantarg. If not that monster and a few others will be missing (some of those nasty gel monsters with an ugly face).

(note: generations is years skipped/32 rounded down. So 94 years is technically 2 generations since 94/32 = 2.9375)

I mean.. its a tech so you should be able to tech the evasion skill for it? Haven't really done it/tested it but it *should* be possible.
