Is there a way to not get a final emperor?
I kinda want to go through the game with regular characters and end with a thief/vagabond class as those are my favourite in jrpgs.

It was possible in the original version- there was even an achievement for it in the 2017 remaster.

I'm not too sure about it myself and it could always be possible that some things were tweaked but it involved playing in a very specific way (and order) so that you don't get a timeskip with your 5th hero.

Of course this still meant that if your emperor died after some point you would still likely get the final emperor.

You can probably find stuff about it if you search for 'another legend' playthroughs.

I haven't tested it, but functionally, all that would be required to get to the final battle without the final emperor is to be at 4 heroes killed and then kill 2 more heroes without a timeskip. It's possible that the game forces a timeskip unnaturally, but my guess is you could try to complete everything leading up to the 2 heroes you're targeting, then do other stuff up until you get a timeskip, then you should try to kill them.

You should probably aim to kill 1 hero other than Dantarg first (not sure which is best, but I'm pretty sure if the first thing you do in a new generation is beat a hero that there are some that won't cause a time skip), and then Dantarg as the 6th hero. The reason I'd leave Dantarg for last is that his quests involve talking to a NPC to finish his quest after killing him and I think it's unlikely to cause a timeskip before doing that.. so just don't talk to the NPCs to finish the quest once you've killed Dantarg.

i dont think there is a way to get around having to choose the final emperor. they do come with more stats than everyone else, though, so they can functionally be any class you like them to be.

edit: if it's purely an aesthetic thing, might have to do some cheat engine shenanigans.

Right, Dantarg and Subier (Ghost ship version, you have to talk to the Diver to finish the quest) work like that, so the idea in the original game was to leave those two for 5 & 6, and the remaining one will bail for the last dungeon without triggering the Final Emperor timeskip.

I just tried something similar (though, I never got subier to spawn in the sunken ship, but it turns out that if you fight Noel without doing the teratuva towers event then the quest doesn't finish until you return to teratuva which behaves similarly - just never return to teratuva), and it seems like when you kill 6 of the heroes the event for the endgame just didn't trigger at all. I'll have to try again sometime and see what happens if you kill all 7 of the heroes without the final emperor.. though I suspect it'll probably still be nothing happening until you go to the final emperor and then you'd probably fight Kzinssie in the final dungeon.

Have you tried sitting on the throne yet?

Yeah I went on the throne and nothing happened. It's possible that killing all 7 heroes might get the game to think that Kzinssie is the last hero even though he hasn't actually resurrected yet which would be a kind of amusing bug, or it might just be that it's just impossible to do the final battle without the final emperor in this version.

More specifically, the way to do it in the OG was the following:

1) Do all the development and side quests you want to do as early as possible. Once you complete the next step, you can't do any more of that!

2) Defeat Wagnas, Bokhohn, and Rocbouquet in any order, keeping in mind that after you defeat the last of these three, this will be your final generation skip.

3) Pick who you want to be your "final" Emperor now. Once you defeat one of the other three heroes in the next step, you cannot party wipe, get your Emperor LP-clapped, or otherwise abdicate (i.e.: complete the Mermaid or Dark Magic quests) or else you'll be given the Final Emperor.

4) In any order:

Defeat Noel without talking to the Desert Guard afterward. This means no Desert Guard for this playthrough.

Defeat Subier in the Sunken Ship. This means either killing the Narwhal or having at least 15 generations pass from the time of Garon's Rebellion to the time you finish the Sunken Ship. Do NOT talk to the Diver afterward, so no Diver 4 U.

Defeat Dantarg in the Child and Mu dungeon, but DO NOT talk to the child or mu afterward. Sorry, kid. That's how things are in these kinds of challenges.

5) Sit on the throne to unlock the final dungeon.

6) Go through the final dungeon. Kzinssie will be the penultimate boss.

7) Defeat meatball as usual. Oddly enough, if you lose to the meatball it's Game Over. The game won't let you choose the actual Final Emperor (M/F) and try again.

Unfortunately, it seems that this is no longer possible in the remake. Returning from the Sunken Ship triggers an automatic cutscene where you meet back up with the Diver. Thus, even if you could still beat Noel and Dantarg without timeskipping, fighting Subier at the Sunken Ship would still cause one.

That could be why there's no "Other Legend" trophy in this version.

yep, being stuck with the Final Emperor even after if u did the last mission and credit roll just only to reload the last savefile is kinda meh, i wish i could change back to another emperor after the end.
