Hi, is this under mac, linux or windows? and when do you get this error? The game (under windows) writes debug files to my documents\my games\democracy 3\debug. Those logs may help. If you can't work out what it is, email cliff AT positech dot co dot uk with those debug logs attached and I shall investigate.

Hi thanks for answering. I just downloaded the game today for windows and after installing the game I go and hit play and the only thing that will pop up is the error message then after I hit ok it closes. Also thank you for adding in those files.

Are you running as a limited user? if so try running as administrator OR re-installing the game into a subfolder under /MyDocuments

Thank you for the help. For some reason the problem resolved itself after having this consisting problem for over half an hour the game finally lauched :). But I do appreciate you taking the time to help me resolve these problems espically after being able not to find any answers off the internet it was nice to just talk to someone and have some direction. Also I saw on your profile you have EU4 so if you ever want to start a multiplayer game I would love to find more people to play with :)

Yeah I find EU4 totally beyond me so far, but I've only spent a few hours with it...

Yeah once you get the hang of the game it gets to be incredible. Also just finished my first two games as Prime Minister of UK and President of the United States. Nothing like Democracy 2 I destroyed the UK with debt and then was Murdered in cold bold as President I guess I shouldn't have cut military spending so much.

I also get this error: "Cannot create a file when a file already exists" and the game fails to start.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit and I'm logged in as a user that has Administrator privileges. I deleted all Democracy 3 local data from my main Steam apps folder using the Steam Client. I then re-installed Democracy 3 into a new Steam library location that I created inside my Documents folder using the Steam client.

This newly created "SteamLibrary" folder has permissions for both the "Administrators" group as well as for my specific Windows user account (which is a member of the Administrator group.) When I click on the Democracy 3 shortcut -- or press play from within the Steam Client, or "Run As Administrator" the actual Democracy 3 application file -- the game creates a folder called "My Games" in the Documents folder. This "My Games" folder has permissions for both the Administrators group and my individual Windows user account.

I'd come across a posting that said Democracy 3 tries to write a log file to this "My Games" folder when it starts. My installation does not create any such log file even though it successfully creates the "My Games" folder itself. Please advise some plan of action as I don't know what else to try. Thanks.
